To elucidate the toxicological relevance of hepatic aldehyde oxidase (AO) as a detoxification enzyme of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), we studied the metabolism and the hepatotoxicity of MPTP in intact rat livers exhibiting different AO activities by using a recirculating perfusion method. In the perfusate during a 90-min recirculation of 1 mM MPTP, the perfused liver fro...

To explore mechanisms of restrictive respiratory physiology and high pleural pressure (P(Pl)) in severe obesity, we studied 51 obese subjects (body mass index = 38-80.7 kg/m(2)) and 10 nonobese subjects, both groups without lung disease, anesthetized, and paralyzed for surgery. We measured esophageal and gastric pressures (P(Es), P(Ga)) using a balloon-catheter, airway pressure (P(AO)), flow, a...

The treatment of verapamil toxicity was examined in lightly sedated dogs. Verapamil, administered as a bolus (0.72 mg/kg) followed by a continuous infusion (0.11 mg/kg per min), decreased cardiac output (CO) from 3.1 +/- 0.1 to 1.7 +/- 0.1 liter/min (P less than 0.001), heart rate (HR) from 85 +/- 4 to 57 +/- 3 beats/min (P less than 0.001), left ventricular derivative of pressure with respect ...

Development of microalbuminuria increases the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in type 2 diabetes. The nature of this relationship is unclear but may involve arterial stiffness, an independent risk marker for CVD mortality. Aortic pulse wave velocity (Ao-PWV) and albumin creatinine ratio (ACR) were measured in 134 consecutive patients with type 2 diabetes without overt renal impairment (se...

BACKGROUND Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a leading cause of morbidity in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Recent evidence suggests that abdominal obesity (AO) may play a role in PAD. However, the association between AO and PAD has not been thoroughly studied in HD patients. METHODS The present cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between AO and PAD in a cohort of 204 chro...

We propose a new decidable subclass of term rewriting systems (TRSs) for which strongly normalizing (SN) property is decidable. The new class is called almost orthogonal inverse finite path overlapping TRSs (AO-FPO−1-TRSs) and the class properly includes AO growing TRSs for which SN is decidable. Tree automata technique is used to show that SN is decidable for AO-FPO−1-TRSs.

BACKGROUND Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and atypical odontalgia (AO) are two conditions involving chronic oral pain in the absence of any organic cause. Psychiatrically they can both be considered as "somatoform disorder". From the dental point of view, however, the two disorders are quite distinct. BMS is a burning or stinging sensation in the mouth in association with a normal mucosa whereas ...

Speech perception under audiovisual (AV) conditions is well known to confer benefits to perception such as increased speed and accuracy. Here, we investigated how AV training might benefit or impede auditory perceptual learning of speech degraded by vocoding. In Experiments 1 and 3, participants learned paired associations between vocoded spoken nonsense words and nonsense pictures. In Experime...
