Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania donovani is endemic in northern Ethiopia, where P. orientalis is the most important presumed vector. This study was designed to determine the physiological age structure and the occurrence of Leishmania infection in the vector of VL in Tahtay Adiyabo district, northern Ethiopia. Sand flies were collected using CDC light traps from peridomestic an...

Strains of Amycolatopsis orientalis produce vancomycin or other related glycopeptide antibiotic compounds. Here we report the draft genome sequences of glycopeptide nonproducers Amycolatopsis orientalis subsp. orientalis DSM 43388 and DSM 46075. Their genome information will provide insights into the acquisition and regulation of glycopeptide antibiotic resistance genes.

In this study, the concentration levels of the probable carcinogenic PAH fractions, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and benzo[k]fluoranthrene (BkF) in fillets of some processed fish species were investigated. Fish species comprising Merluccius poli (hake), Tyrsites atun (snoek), Seriola lalandi (yellow-tail) and Brama brama (angel fish) were bought in fish shops at Gordon's Bay, Western Cape, South Africa...

The Rybinsk Reservoir (Russia) is the largest artificial waterbody in Europe (4550 km2) and provides drinking water for population of the cities located along the coast line. Industrialization in Cherepovets at the northeastern portion of the reservoir, including one of the largest metallurgical facilities in Europe, has resulted in chemical contamination of the reservoir. The extent of polychl...

Biometric analysis helps in sex differentiation, understanding development and for studies of avian biology such as foraging ecology, evolutionary ecology, and survivorship. We suggest that biometry can also be a reliable, practical and inexpensive tool to determine the age of nestlings in the field by non-invasive methods. As an example we studied the biometry of wing, culmen, talon, tarsus an...

An Alkanna orientalis leaf and flower extract inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, a pathogen that causes an estimated 478 000 hospitalizations in the US annually. Bioassay-guided fractionation of A. orientalis resulted in isolation of the flavonoid sarothrin (5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3,6,8-trimethoxyflavone), which inhibited the growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis (MIC 75 µM) and S. aureus (M...

Amycolatopsis orientalis DSM 43387, a clinical isolate from submandibular mycetoma tissue, is one of three plasmid-bearing strains of the genus Amycolatopsis. It degrades aromatic compounds such as m-hydroxybenzoate, but does not produce any antibiotics, in contrast to Amycolatopsis orientalis NBRC 12806T. Phylogenetic analysis based on a complete 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the strain in the...

In this study, esterase isozyme polymorphisms in Boreal-Tertiary origin relict endemic L. orientalis populations were investigated. Four populations located in the Southern and the Southwestern regions of Turkey were screened. Two of these populations (Fethiye-Günlüklü and Fethiye-İnlice) belong to subspecies L. orientalis Mill.var. orientalis. The other two (Muğla-Köyceğiz and Antalya-Gebiz) b...
