CeO2を担体とした一連のPt系二元金属触媒 (Pt3M/CeO2, M = Bi, Ga, Ge, In, Sn) を調製し,電場下でのメタン非酸化カップリングにおいて300℃という比較的低温領域にてその触媒性能を試験した。単金属Pt(Pt/CeO2)およびPtをGeまたはInで修飾した触媒(Pt3Ge/CeO2,Pt3In/CeO2)では反応はほとんど進行しなかったが,PtをSnまたはBiで修飾した触媒(Pt3Sn/CeO2,Pt3Bi/CeO2)では,エタンおよびエチレンの収率が大きく向上し,Ptのみの場合に比べそれぞれ100倍,70倍に向上した。またこれらの触媒ではプロパンとプロピレンの生成も少量確認された。単位電力当たりの触媒活性で比較すると,Pt3Bi/CeO2はPt3Sn/CeO2に比べ2.4倍の活性を示しただけでなく,オレフィン含有量も高かった。
