We evaluated the clinical significance of prognostic factors including the International Staging System (ISS) and modified European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation response criteria in 1650 Japanese patients with multiple myeloma (MM) who underwent upfront single autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). We categorized patients into two treatment cohorts: pre-novel agent era (1995...

LIM domain only 4 (LMO4), a member of the LIM-only family of transcriptional coregulatory proteins, consists of two LIM protein-protein interaction domains that enable it to function as a linker protein in multiprotein complexes. Here, we have identified estrogen receptor A (ERA) and its corepressor, metastasis tumor antigen 1 (MTA1), as two novel binding partners of LMO4. Interestingly, LMO4 e...

Objective: The present study examined how expectations regarding aging (ERA) influence physical activity participation and physical function. Method: We surveyed 148 older adults about their ERA (ERA-38), health-promoting lifestyles (HPLP-II), and self-rated health (RAND-36). We tested the mediating effect of physical activity on the relationships between ERA and physical function. Results: Pos...

Breast cancer presents as either estrogen receptor A (ERA) positive or negative, with ERA+ tumors responding to antiestrogen therapy and having a better prognosis. By themselves, mRNA expression signatures of estrogen regulation in ERA+ breast cancer cells do not account for the vast molecular differences observed between ERA+ and ERA cancers. In ERA tumors, overexpression of epidermal growth f...

Era is an essential GTP binding protein in Escherichia coli. Two homologs of this protein, Sgp from Streptococcus mutans and Era from Coxiella burnetii, can substitute for the essential function of Era in E. coli. Site-specific and randomly generated Era mutants which may indicate regions of the protein that are of functional importance are described.

[1] Using the ERA-40 reanalysis data, we study the different roles of synoptic and low-frequency eddies in sustaining the latitudinal shift of the low-level baroclinicity associated with the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode. The eddy effect is assessed through the direct eddy thermal forcing via eddy heat flux and the indirect forcing via eddy-driven mean meridional circulation (MMC). We find t...

[1] Decadal hindcast simulations of Arctic Ocean sea ice thickness made by a modern dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model and forced independently by both the ERA-40 and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data sets are compared for the first time. Using comprehensive data sets of observations made between 1979 and 2001 of sea ice thickness, draft, extent, and speeds, we find that it is possible to tune model p...

The emergence of new mobile platforms built on Google’s Android operating system represents a significant shift in the locus of the platform “bottleneck,” or control point, in the mobile industry. Using a case study approach, this paper examines firm strategies in a market where the traditional location of the ICT platform bottleneck—the operating system on a device—is no longer the most import...

The “edge” of the Antarctic polar vortex is known to behave as a barrier to the meridional (poleward) transport of ozone during the austral winter. This chemical isolation of the polar vortex from the middle and low latitudes produces an ozone minimum in the vortex region, intensifying the ozone hole relative to that which would be produced by photochemical processes alone. Observational determ...
