INTRODUCTION In an attempt to improve the radioisotope analyses made in our laboratory on the products of fission mixtures, we attempted the replacement of the classical radiochemical methods (separation, then measurement) by automatic methods in which a more sophisticated analytical process is followed by on-line measurement utilizing Cerenkov counting. In the classical methods which are often...

Mechanical ventilation systems for controlling conditions in individual zones can move a constant or variable supply of conditioned air to handle all or some of the heating and cooling loads. They are classified as all-air, air-water, and all-water systems. All-air systems include single-duct, dual-duct and multizone. The systems can be designed to operate at Constant Air Volume (CAV) or Variab...

Integration of reaction and separation in one single step has often been claimed to provide enhanced processing and economic results when compared with the traditional configuration where a reaction unit is followed by a downstream separation unit, due to alleviation of kinetic and thermodynamic constraints. This paper quantitatively addresses the kinetic and thermodynamic improvements which ca...

Bacterial recovery by a portable Reuter centrifugal air sampler and a standard Mattson-Garvin slit-to-agar air sampler was compared in a series of experiments. Microbial air quality was monitored in seven typical laboratory locations. Tests showed that the Reuter centrifugal air sampler yielded significantly higher recoveries than did the slit-to-agar unit.

In integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System, separation assurance is one of the important air traffic services for ensuring safe operations of air traffic. This paper describes an approach to develop a range of operational concepts by describing what functions and technologies are required to maintain safe separation of unmanned aircraft and how those functi...

Flotation in the mining industry is a very significant separation technique. It known that fine and ultra-fine particles are difficult to float, leading losses of valuable minerals, mainly due their low collision efficiency with bubbles. can be enhanced either by increasing apparent particle size or decreasing bubble size. Literature review reveals electroflotation resulted higher recoveries ul...

Two human-in-the-loop simulation experiments were conducted in coordinated fashion to investigate the allocation of separation assurance functions between ground and air and between humans and automation. The experiments modeled a mixed-operations concept in which aircraft receiving groundbased separation services shared the airspace with aircraft providing their own separation service (i.e., s...

Increasing worldwide demand for mammalian cell production capacity will likely be partially satisfied by a greater use of higher volumetric productivity perfusion processes. An important additional component of any perfusion system is the cell retention device that can be based on filtration, sedimentation, and/or acoustic technologies. A common concern with these systems is that pumping and tr...
