Abstract Background and Objective: Along with antibiotics, the use of biological methods to combat bacteria is notably considered. A natural barrier such as amniotic membrane is one of the ways of dealing with bacterial infections. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial effect of human amniotic membrane. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was performed in Dezyani te...

an interesting case of atresia of the vagina and cleft p alate is described, with menstruation occurring through a fistula. normal saline was used for distension of the upper vagina, without any successful results. therefore, the mcindoe operative technique with amnion graft was utilized. eight months after the operation, the patient has a normal menstrual cycle, a good caliber neovagina and no...

INTRODUCTION Periapical surgery is the last resort in the arsenal of an endodontist to effectively deal with periapical lesions that result from necrosis of the pulp. Bone grafts, growth factors and membranes form an array of regenerative materials that influence the healing outcome of periapical surgery. PRESENTATION OF CASE The main purpose of the two cases reported here was to assess the p...

Oxidative stress (OS)-induced senescence of the amniochorion has been associated with parturition at term. We investigated whether telomere fragments shed into the amniotic fluid (AF) correlated with labor status and tested if exogenous telomere fragments (T-oligos) could induce human and murine amnion cell senescence. In a cross-sectional clinical study, AF telomere fragment concentrations qua...

Endocannabinoids have been implicated in the mechanisms of implantation, maintenance of pregnancy, and parturition in women. Intrauterine prostaglandin production and actions are also critical in each of these mechanisms. Hence, we have evaluated the effects of cannabinoids on prostaglandin biosynthesis by human gestational membranes. Explants of term amnion and choriodecidua were established a...

T-box genes encode transcription factors that regulate many developmental processes. We have cloned a novel mouse T-box gene, Tbx12. Tbx12 is the vertebrate homologue of the Drosophila H15 gene and the Caenorhabditis elegans tbx-12 gene. Tbx12 is expressed in extraembryonic tissues such as the amnion and allantois. In the embryo, Tbx12 is strongly expressed in the neural retina and the heart.

Amniotic bands are described in two children with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV and in one with severe osteogenesis imperfecta. Since the basic defect in both of these disorders rests in collagen, which constitutes the main component of the load bearing amnion, it is proposed that these cases provide further insight into the pathogenesis of amniotic bands.

There are three types of monozygotic (MZ) twins. MZ twins can either share one chorion and one amnion, each twin can have its own amnion, or MZ twins can-like dizygotic twins-each have their own chorion and amnion. Sharing the same chorion may create a more similar/dissimilar prenatal environment and bias heritability estimates, but most twin studies do not distinguish between these three types...

Two isoforms of 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11 beta HSD) are present in mammals. 11 beta HSD1 interconverts biologically active cortisol and inactive cortisone, whereas 11 beta HSD2 only converts cortisol to cortisone. Placental 11 beta HSD has been proposed to protect the fetus from high level of maternal glucocorticoids. Although bidirectional activity of 11 beta HSD has been demons...
