Twelve strains of Haemophilus influenzae were tested for susceptibility to gentamicin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and cephalothin using two methods, agar dilution and microdilution (broth). Although inocula and incubation conditions were standardized, significant differences in the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) were seen as a result of growth media. Method dependent differences were a...

background: multidrug resistance in salmonella enteritidis isolates is a public health problem worldwide; the present study, therefore, was designed for antimicrobial-resistance determination in this strain. methods: salmonella strains isolated from poultry samples by biochemical positive and negative tests were subjected to pcr and identified as salmonella enteritidis. for detection and identi...

Background and Objective: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most prevalent bacterial infections and Escherichia coli is the most common cause of it. The aim of this study was determination of the antibiotic resistance of E. coli isolated from urine of adult patients (≥15 years old) harboring UTI symptoms at Pars General Hospital in Tehran, Iran, for evaluating the most effective drug ...

The antimicrobial susceptibilities of 421 Pasteurella haemolytica and 158 P. multocida isolates recovered from cattle with respiratory disease were determined with a microdilution minimal inhibitory concentration test system. Isolates were analyzed for patterns of resistance to ampicillin, ceftiofur, erythromycin, gentamicin, penicillin, spectinomycin, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfadimethoxine, te...

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on 48 isolates of Helicobacter pylori recovered from Egyptian children undergoing routine endoscopies. The isolates were universally highly resistant to metronidazole, but resistance to other tested antimicrobial agents was rare (4% for clarithromycin, erythromycin, and azithromycin resistance versus 2% for ciprofloxacin and ampicillin resistan...

BACKGROUND GPs are urged to prescribe antibiotics less frequently, despite lack of evidence linking reduced antibiotic prescribing with reductions in resistance at a local level. AIM To investigate associations between changes in antibiotic dispensing and changes in antibiotic resistance at general-practice level. DESIGN OF STUDY Seven-year study of dispensed antibiotics and antibiotic resi...

A conjugative plasmid, pOLA52, conferring resistance to the antibiotic growth promoter olaquindox has been isolated from Escherichia coli from swine manure. It also confers resistance to ampicillin and chloramphenicol and has a high frequency of transfer between strains of E. coli. Plasmid-borne olaquindox resistance has not been demonstrated before.

OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of community prescribing of an antibiotic for acute respiratory infection on the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in an individual child. STUDY DESIGN Observational cohort study with follow-up at two and 12 weeks. SETTING General practices in Oxfordshire. PARTICIPANTS 119 children with acute respiratory tract infection, of whom 71 received a beta ...

The pBR322 plasmid contains genes encoding for tetracycline and ampicillin resistance. Escherichia coli DH5α cells with pBR322 plasmid were grown and plated on selective plates containing 1) ampicillin only and 2) tetracycline only with varying antibiotic concentrations of half strength, three-fourth strength and full strength (15 μg/mL tetracycline and 50 μg/mL ampicillin for full strength). C...

By Etest determination of the susceptibilities of 229 Haemophilus influenzae strains isolated in Korea to 10 antibiotics, the isolates were found to be antibiotic nonsusceptible in the following order: ampicillin (58.1%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (52%), cefaclor (41.1%), clarithromycin (25.8%), chloramphenicol (14.0%), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (13.5%), meropenem (11.7%), cefixime (10.9%...
