The purpose of this case report was to present a rare case of optic disk tubercle. The optic disk edema resolved on antituberculous therapy with recovery of vision. We concluded that visual loss from an optic disk tubercle can be the presenting sign of tuberculosis.
Spinal intradural intramedullary tuberculoma is extremely rare entity of tuberculosis involving the nervous system. Because of its atypical symptomatology, it must be considered in differential diagnosis of spinal cord lesions, especially where prevalence of tuberculosis is high. In this case report this atypical disease is described where good outcome was achieved by surgical excision of the i...
In 44 patients with tuberculosis of the foot we identified five radiological patterns of lesions; cystic, rheumatoid, subperiosteal, kissing and spina ventosa. Cystic destruction had the best outcome and rheumatoid the poorest. All the patients were cured after antituberculous treatment for 18 months, and none required surgery.
A strain of Bacteroides fragilis with high-level chromosomal resistance to rifampicin was isolated by blood culture from a patient with bacteraemia after gastrointestinal surgery. He had been receiving antituberculous therapy with rifampicin for nine months. This resistance led to some difficulty in the recognition and identification of the isolate by methods that depended upon antibiotic sensi...
A 23 year old man with a congenital myelodysplastic disorder and fibrosing lung disease received treatment with prednisolone. After nine months his condition deteriorated and Mycobacterium kansasii was isolated from blood cultures and lymph node biopsy specimens. He responded to antituberculous treatment. M kansasii has not previously been isolated from the blood stream of HIV negative patients.
Sección de Dermatología, Hospital General de Lanzarote, Spain radiological data to support this hypothesis. Furthermore, the patient was not treated with antituberculous drugs and the cutaneous lesions healed with topical corticosteroid therapy alone. In conclusion, we describe the case of a patient who presented an episode consistent with generalized pustular psoriasis after a tuberculin test,...
A high degree of suspicion and appropriate imaging studies are required for the early diagnosis of Pott's spine. We describe a 4-year-old boy with Pott's disease of the lumbar spine with bilateral psoas abscesses. The child responded to conservative treatment with antituberculous treatment and ultrasonographically guided percutaneous drainage of the abscesses.
A case of tuberculosis of the conjunctiva in association with a neighbouring lupus vulgaris lesion is reported. Both lesions resolved within one month of starting antituberculous therapy. Tuberculosis of the conjunctiva is nowadays a rare condition. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any unusual chronic conjunctivitis, particularly in patients who are at risk of contractin...
The SufBCD complex is an essential component of the SUF machinery of [Fe-S] cluster biogenesis in many organisms. We show here that in Mycobacterium tuberculosis the formation of this complex is dependent on the protein splicing of SufB, suggesting that this process is a potential new target for antituberculous drugs.
Eight members of a large kindred of mixed ancestry from a remote rural area of South Africa were investigated for deafness. In each, severe permanent perceptive hearing loss had developed during antituberculous therapy with streptomycin sulphate in conventional doses. Although unproven by the data available in this study, the familial aggregation and pattern of distribution of sensitivity to st...
