Epidemiologically linked clusters are confirmed by typing strains with molecular typing such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). We compared six extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing E. coli of a PFGE-related cluster with Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass-spectrometry based typing that confirmed relatedness faster and more cost-effective, but as reliable ...

No clinical isolates have been reported for the recently described thermoactinomycete Kroppenstedtia eburnea. Between 2006 and 2011, we obtained 14 clinical isolates from patients in 9 U.S. states. Here we report growth characteristics, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry-based identification, and antimicrobial susce...

We describe the clinical course of four patients who had Trichosporon mycotoxinivorans recovered from multiple sputum cultures over time with various clinical consequences but no fatalities. We also report successful rapid identification of this organism using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry.

A molecular solid of fullerene (C(60)) intercalated with cobalt cyclopentadienyl dicarbonyl (CoCp(CO)(2)) was shown to be an effective matrix for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI) of large alkanes (demonstrated up to C(94)H(190)) and polyethylenes that otherwise cannot be produced as intact ions in the gas phase.

We evaluated the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MS) for the identification of Vibrio cholerae. MS identified all 42 isolates of V. cholerae O1 and O139 and 7 of 9 non-O1/O139 isolates. MS correctly discriminated between all Aeromonas and V. cholerae isolates. Overall, MS performed as well as or better than biochemical methods.

Identification ofNeisseria gonorrhoeaeby the Bruker matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) system may be affected by "B consistency categorization." A supplementary database of 17N. gonorrhoeaemain spectra was constructed. Twelve of 64N. gonorrhoeaeidentifications were categorized with B consistency, which disappeared using the supplementary ...

Fastidiosipila sanguinis is a Gram-positive anaerobic coccus. We report the first case of osteitis implicating this species. The strain was accurately identified by 16S rRNA sequence analysis, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) identification having failed. The reservoir remained unclear; an endogenous origin is suspected.

Urosepsis due to Aerococcus urinae is rare in clinical settings with only a few of reported cases worldwide by 16S rRNA sequencing. Here we report a case of sepsis caused by A. urinae in a 86 year-old male with complicated urinary tract infection which was confirmed through peptide mass fingerprinting of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry.

The accuracy of matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in the identification of Haemophilus, Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, and Kingella (HACEK) species was compared to that of phenotypic methods (Remel RapID and Vitek 2). Overall, Vitek MS correctly identified more isolates, incorrectly identified fewer isolates, and failed to ...

We report the isolation of three bacterial strains that could not be identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry screening. 'Gracilibacillus phocaeensis' sp. nov., 'Sediminibacillus massiliensis' sp. nov. and 'Virgibacillus ndiopensis' sp. nov. are halophilic species isolated from salty human stools by culturomics.
