Yersinia adhesin A (YadA) is an essential virulence factor for the food-borne pathogens Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. Surprisingly, it is a pseudogene in Yersinia pestis. Even more intriguing, the introduction of a functional yadA gene in Y. pestis EV76 was shown to correlate with a decrease in virulence in a mouse model. Here, we report that wild type (wt) Y. enteroc...

The Black Death is possibly the most infamous pandemic in human history, which killed onethird of the European population and subsequently shaped Western civilization (reviewed in [5]). Epidemics occurred in relentless cycles up to the seventeenth century, until severe depopulation caused a gradual decline in cases. All this was caused by a single pathological agent, the Gram-negative bacterium...

The expression of the temperature-inducible plasmid-coded outer membrane proteins (YOPs) of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis was studied. These proteins were not recovered in the outer membrane fraction when the strain was grown in minimal medium at 37 degrees C, but they were expressed under these conditions. A strict correlation was found between Ca2+ dependency in the virulent strain, YPIII(pIB1)...

Numerous Gram-negative pathogens rely upon type III secretion (T3S) systems to cause disease. Several small-molecule inhibitors of the type III secretion systems have been identified; however, few targets of these inhibitors have been elucidated. Here we report that 2,2'-thiobis-(4-methylphenol) (compound D), inhibits type III secretion in Yersinia pestis, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, and Pseud...

Objectives: Psychological problems could have some relationship with undetermined chest pain. The aim of this study was to compare the general mental health status of out-patients with atypical chest pain with a reference age and sex matched controls. Materials and Methods: Patients less than 40 years old, with atypical chest pain and low probability of ischemic heart disease were included in t...

A Congo red-magnesium oxalate agar medium was developed to detect expression of virulence-associated calcium dependency and Congo red absorption in Yersinia enterocolitica. Of the 157 pathogenic serotypes tested, 119 (75.8%) were positive; 98% of nonpathogenic serotypes and strains of three other Yersinia species were negative.

The ability of the API 20E system to identify 105 clinical isolates of Yersinia spp. was compared with those of conventional biochemical tests at 28 and 37 degrees C. Elimination of the Voges-Proskauer test (recorded as a negative result) increased the percentage of correct identifications for Yersinia spp. from 66 to 93% when the API 20E strips were incubated at 28 degrees C.

Patients are often referred to the genitourinary clinic for screening for urethral infections after a clinical diagnosis of Reiter's syndrome or reactive arthritis. We report a case of reactive polyarthritis in which serological evidence of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection was found in the absence of the other common precipitating organisms, such as Chlamydia spp, Klebsiella spp, Shigella ...

YopN is a secreted protein that prior to secretion directly interacts with the cytosolic SycN/YscB chaperone complex and TyeA. This study identifies a secreted YopN-TyeA hybrid protein that is expressed by Yersinia pestis, but not by Yersinia enterocolitica. DNA sequence analysis and site-directed mutagenesis studies demonstrate that the hybrid protein is the result of a +1 translational frames...

We report here the draft sequence of strain CEB14_0017, alias HIAD_DUP, recovered from a human patient and initially identified as Yersinia pestis by mass spectrometry analysis. Genotyping based on tandem repeat polymorphism assigned the strain to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis sequence type 42 (ST42). The total assembly length is 4,894,739 bp.
