Escherichia coli strains that cause disease outside the intestine are known as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) and include pathogens of humans and animals. Previously, the genome of avian-pathogenic E. coli (APEC) O1:K1:H7 strain O1, from ST95, was sequenced and compared to those of several other E. coli strains, identifying 43 genomic islands. Here, the genomic islands of APEC O1 we...

UNLABELLED Escherichia coli outbreak in Germany, which resulted in more than 4,000 cases, including 908 cases of hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) and at least 50 deaths, highlighted the genome plasticity of E. coli and the potential for new virulent strains to emerge. The analysis of 170 E. coli genome sequences for the presence of nine previously identified protective extraintestinal pathogenic...

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) causes avian colibacillosis or and is a major endemic disease of poultry worldwide, including in Indonesia. It characterized by black proventriculus can damage other organs, leading to pericarditis, perihepatitis, water sacculitis, mesenteritis, omphalitis. The APEC strain one the six main sub-pathotypes extraintestinal E. (ExPEC) pathotype. relationship...

We analyzed isolates of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (which has recently caused waterborne outbreaks) and wild-type E. coli to determine their sensitivity to chlorination. Both pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains were significantly reduced within 1 minute of exposure to free chlorine. Results indicate that chlorine levels typically maintained in water systems are sufficient to inactivate these org...

This study was carried out to evaluate the resistance patterns of pathogenic Escherichia coli which cause diarrhea in children less than 5 years. Stool samples were collected from young children suffering from diarrhea in different hospitals and health centers, and the bacteria was then isolated and identified. The susceptibility of pathogenic Escherichia coli for seven known used antibiotics w...

The invasin gimB (genetic island associated with human newborn meningitis) is usually found in ExPEC (Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli) such as UPEC (uropathogenic E. coli), NMEC (neonatal meningitis E. coli) and APEC (avian pathogenic E. coli). In NMEC, gimB is associated with the invasion process of the host cells. Due to the importance of E. coli as a zoonotic agent and the scarce...

Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli were able to bind to plant surfaces, including alfalfa sprouts and open seed coats, and tomato and Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings incubated in water. The characteristics of the binding differed with the bacterial strain examined. Laboratory K12 strains of E. coli failed to show significant binding to any of the plant surfaces examined, suggesting that some of the ...

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) are heterogeneous, diarrheagenic E. coli. Of EAEC strains from Nigeria, 10 independent antimicrobial-resistant isolates belonged to the multilocus sequence type 69 clonal complex, to which uropathogenic E. coli clonal group A belongs. This finding suggests a recent common ancestor for these distinct groups of pathogenic E. coli.

The complete nucleotide sequence and genetic organization of a new genomic island (AGI-3) isolated from the extraintestinal avian pathogenic Escherichia coli strain BEN2908 is reported. This 49,600-bp island is inserted at the selC locus and contains putative mobile genetic elements such as a phage-related integrase gene, transposase genes, and direct repeats. AGI-3 shows a mosaic structure of ...

Abstract Background and Objective: Escherichia coli O157:H7 is one of the most well-known pathogenic bacteria worldwide that can develop severe diseases such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of virulence genes of E. coli O157:H7 in patients with suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs). Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was co...
