We investigate the dynamics of a flexible, elastic fibre, suspended in a fluid and subjected to a 3D shear flow. Simulations are performed using the “Immersed Boundary Method,” and are distinguished by their ability to capture the hydrodynamic interaction between the fluid and fibre, as well as the detailed structure of the individual fibres. Suspensions of flexible fibres are encountered in ma...

Summary This work presents variational concepts associated with reduced Trefftz type approaches and discusses the interrelationship between various concepts of the displacement, hybrid and Trefftz methods. The basic concept of the displacement version of the reduced Trefftz method operates on the natural boundary conditions enforced in an integral form whereas the stress version of the reduced ...

We examine the influence of roofs’ shapes on the boundary layer of a simplified urban canopy by computing non-stationary Navier-Stokes flow over a periodic pattern. The solution is obtained by means of finite element method (FEM). We use non-conforming Crouzeix-Raviart elements for velocity and piecewise constant elements for pressure. The resulting linear system is solved by the multigrid meth...

A hybrid finite-element-method/method-of-moments (FEM/MoM) approach is applied to the analysis of a gapped power-bus structure on a printed circuit board. FEM is used to model the details of the structure. MoM is used to provide a radiation boundary condition to terminate the FEM mesh. Numerical results exhibit significant errors when the FEM/MoM boundary is chosen to coincide with the physical...

We present and analyze a coupled finite element-boundary element method for a model in stationary micromagnetics. The finite element part is based on mixed conforming elements. For two- and three-dimensional settings, we show well-posedness of the discrete problem and present an a priori error analysis for the case of lowest order elements.

We derive and implement boundary integral methods for axisymmetric liquid bridge problems in the presence of an axial electric field. The liquid bridge is bounded by solid parallel electrodes placed perpendicular to the axis of symmetry and held at a constant potential difference. The fluid is assumed to be nonconducting and has permittivity different from that of the passive surrounding medium...
