1 of 3 DESCRIPTION Rheumatic heart disease is the most common cause of mitral stenosis, and percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy (BMV) has stood the test of time as the standard therapy for the same. We describe a very unusual complication of cardiac catheterisation that occurred during an otherwise uneventful procedure. A 65-year-old woman was diagnosed with severe mitral stenosis due to rheu...

Background Heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a serious complication related to the heparin treatment and might lead to the life-threatening consequences such as arterial and venous thrombosis. The patient with HIT scheduled for cardiac surgery represents serious problem because heparin, most common used anticoagulation drug during cardiac surgery, must be avoided. Conclusions From the r...

Two patients with large pericardial thrombi following cardiac surgery presented as having right cardiac tamponade. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) identified a large pericardial hematoma compressing the right atrium and was well tolerated by these critically ill patients. These case reports demonstrate the diagnostic value of TEE in the identification of this severe complication in the l...

Amiodarone-induced thryrotoxicosis (AIT) is a rare but serious complication of amiodarone use, especially in patients with severe cardiac disease. We present a patient who developed AIT, following administration of amiodarone for life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. We discuss the medical management of AIT and anesthetic considerations for management of patients with thyrotoxicosis and sev...

The infection of cardiac implantable electronic device is a serious and potentially lethal complication. Accurate preoperative evaluation of location of vegetation, cardiac valve pathology is of paramount important. We reported a case of 71-year-old male patient who suffered from pacemaker endocarditis was given suitable surgical treatment under the guidance of real-time three-dimensional trans...

Diaphragmatic paralysis after cardiac surgery is an important complication especially in infants. We report a child who developed diaphragmatic paralysis, atelectasis, bronchomalasia and respiratory failure following cardiac surgery. Ventilatory support alleviated respiratory distress in this child. This report illustrates the usefulness of invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support for a pe...

High-output cardiac failure in multiple myeloma (MM) is related to arteriovenous shunting in bone infiltrate disease. We describe such a complication in a patient with primary plasma cell leukemia (pPCL) without bone disease. We review the mechanisms that could be involved. As previously described, traditional cardiac failure therapy is not effective. pPCL therapy should not be delayed.

Lupus myocarditis is a life threatening complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A case of left ventricular failure secondary to myocarditis occurring in a patient with SLE is reported. Despite resolution of the cardiac failure with pulsed cyclophosphamide and steroids, she eventually died of non-cardiac complications 18 months later. The literature is also reviewed.

New onset atrial fibrillation (AF) is the commonest complication after cardiac surgery affecting around 30% of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients, up to 50% of valve surgery patients and as many as 60% of those undergoing combined valve and CABG operations. After cardiac transplantation where the native pulmonary veins are electrically separated from the donor heart atria the incidenc...

Accelerated coronary ostial stenosis is an infrequent late complication of coronary artery catheter instrumentation during aortic valve surgery, PTCA, or coronary angiography. We report the first case of bilateral coronary artery ostial stenoses developing after cardiac catheterization and right coronary artery PTCA. In patients with worsening angina following cardiac catheterization or PTCA, a...
