This article presents a study of Poincaré-mode patterns produced by superpositions of high-order Laguerre-Gauss modes in orthogonal polarization eigenstates. We cover the cases of three polarization bases: circular, linear and elliptical. We show that a variety of patterns can be created, many containing polarization singularities and multiple mappings of the Poincaré sphere onto the beam mode.

We have used the University of Tasmania Mt Pleasant 26-m radio telescope to investigate the polarisation characteristics of a sample of strong 6.7GHz methanol masers, the first spectral line polarisation observations to be undertaken with this instrument. As part of this process we have developed a new technique for calibrating linear polarisation spectral line observations. This calibration me...

We present polarization profiles at 1.4 and 3.1 GHz for 14 young pulsars with characteristic ages less than 75 kyr. Careful calibration ensures that the absolute position angle of the linearly polarized radiation at the pulsar is obtained. In combination with previously published data we draw three main conclusions about the pulse profiles of young pulsars. (1) Pulse profiles are simple and con...

In this paper, the forward and inverse analyses of oneand two-layer photoelastic tactile transducers are presented. For such transducers, an applied force profile generates stresses in the photoelastic layer, making it birefringent. Consequently, circularly polarized light input to the transducer becomes elliptically polarized at the output because of the introduction of a phase-lead distributi...

1.Introduction In 3rd generation synchrotron radiation (SR), one of the most promising items may be control and characterization of polarization state. In particular, they are a crucial factor to study magnetic properties using the various techniques inscattering, absorption, diffraction and emission experiments. Indeed, low emittance SR such as Spring-8 can efficiently realize this performance...

We discuss the constraints that recent observations place on circular polarisation in AGN. In many sources the circular polarisation is variable on short timescales, indicating that it originates in compact regions of the sources. The best prospects for gleaning further information about circular polarisation are high resolution VLBI and scintillation ‘imaging’ which probe source structure on m...

A printed circular open-loop antenna is introduced as a simple structure for producing circular polarization, the antenna is fed with a coaxial probe. By introducing a gap within the circular loop a traveling-wave current is excited and thus circularly polarized radiation can be achieved. An optimized circularly polarized antenna is designed through numerical analysis using a so-called parametr...

The creeping motion through a circular tube of neutrally buoyant Newtonian drops which have an undeformed radius comparable to that of the tube was studied experimentally. Both a Newtonian and a viscoelastic suspending fluid were used in order to determine the influence ofviscoelasticity. The extra pressure drop owing to the presence of the suspended drops, the shape and velocity of the drops, ...

We study the permanent regimes of the reduced Vlasov–Maxwell system for laser-plasma interaction. A non-relativistic and two different relativistic models are investigated. We prove the existence of solutions where the distribution function is Boltzmannian and the electromagnetic variables are time-harmonic and circularly polarized.

Two-pion photoproduction in the reaction ~γp → pππ has been studied at Jefferson Lab Hall B using a circularly-polarized tagged photon beam in the energy range between 0.6 GeV and 2.3 GeV. Owing to the large angular acceptance of the CLAS detector, complete beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit stron...
