Many of the genes coding for extracellular toxins, enzymes, and cell surface proteins in Staphylococcus aureus are regulated by a 510-nucleotide (nt) RNA molecule, RNAIII. Transcription of genes encoding secreted toxins and enzymes, including hla (alpha-toxin), saeB (enterotoxin B), tst (toxic shock syndrome toxin 1), and ssp (serine protease), is stimulated, while transcription of genes encodi...

Background: Antibacterial activities of crude Azadirachta indica (neem) bark and leaf extracts were investigated in bacterial species isolated from clinical samples of diabetic individuals. Methods and Material: Nine different dilutions of methanolic bark and leaf extracts were tested for this purpose in agar well diffusion method. Results: Both the extracts were active against Gram positive as...

Mupirocin MICs and mupA presence were determined in 108 staphylococci causing prosthetic joint infection. Zero of 35 isolates (0%) of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, 4/15 (27%) methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates, 3/16 (19%) methicillin-susceptible coagulase-negative staphylococci, and 11/42 (26%) methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci were mupirocin resistan...

Although coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) is a frequent cause of prosthetic valve endocarditis, native valve endocarditis (NVE) caused by CoNS is not commonly seen. Its high mortality is well known; however, there are no systematic reports published in Japan. We herein report the cases of two Japanese patients with CoNS NVE who were admitted to our hospital located in Tokyo and conduct l...

Candida coagulase production was assessed by the classical tube test. All Candida krusei strains were coagulase negative, but most C. albicans and C. tropicalis strains can produce coagulase. Some strains agglutinated the Pastorex Staph-Plus reagent, probably because of antigen similarities to coagulase produced by Staphylococcus aureus that may cause mistakes in clinical laboratories.

The present study was conducted to isolate and characterize the molecular epidemiology of the methicillin-resistant staphylococci in the general university environment, where all five locations; the library, restrooms, canteens, computer rooms and outdoor surfaces, are in common use by a large population of students. We used Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) supplemented with 4 μg/ml of oxacillin to scr...
