BACKGROUND Leptospirosis in dogs is occasionally associated with a hemorrhagic syndrome, the pathophysiology of which is not fully understood. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To characterize hematologic, hemostatic, and thromboelastometric abnormalities in dogs with leptospirosis and to study their association with hemorrhagic diatheses and outcomes. ANIMALS Thirty-five client-owned dogs. METHODS A...

Bacterial infections of the lungs and abdomen are among the most common causes of sepsis. Abdominal peritonitis often results in acute lung injury (ALI). Recent reports demonstrate a potential benefit of parenteral vitamin C [ascorbic acid (AscA)] in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Therefore we examined the mechanisms of vitamin C supplementation in the setting of abdominal peritonitis-mediated ALI...

Identifying coagulation abnormalities in patients with combined bleeding and thrombosis history is clinically challenging. Our goal was to probe the complexity of dysregulated coagulation in humans by characterizing pathophysiologic mechanisms in a patient with both bleeding and thrombosis. The patient is a 56-year-old female with a history of haematomas, poor wound healing, and thrombosis (ret...

Several haemostatic abnormalities have been reported in thyroid hormone excess. However, the overall effect on coagulation and fibrinolysis is still unclear. We were presented the unique opportunity to further explore the effects of excessive levels of thyroid hormone in the case of a young woman who attempted suicide by auto-intoxication with levothyroxine. Levels of thyroid hormones and param...

Introduction The coagulation cascade is a dynamic process dependent on many factors. It involves interaction between primary hemostasis, platelet clot formation, secondary hemostasis, thrombin generation, and fibrinolysis. The assessment of this process is particularly important in the surgical patient to properly assess patient coagulation assessment, manage hemostatic therapy and transfusion ...

Background: Coagulopathy is a common manifestation in cases of snake bite and its abnormality can be detected by blood coagulation tests. There are very few references in the literature related to coagulation parameter abnormalities after snake bite, evaluation of their seriousness and the length of the follow up period. Therefore we have undertaken this study to throw some light on the need of...

asymmetric membranes are widely used in many industrial membrane separation processes. the major advantage of membrane filtration over the conventional process is its ability to remove a wider spectrum of particles without using any chemicals. hollow fiber configuration offer many advantages over flat-sheet or tubular membranes. the spinning process of hollow fiber may look simple, yet it is te...

Abnormalities of platelet number and function are the most common coagulation disorders seen among ICU patients. This article reviews the most frequent causes of thrombocytopenia by providing an overview of the following most common mechanisms: impaired production; sequestration; dilution; and destruction. Guidelines for treating thrombocytopenia and platelet dysfunction are also provided.

We describe a 33 year old woman who developed unexplained haemolytic anaemia following renal transplantation and who was found to have multiple splenic haemangiomata. This case demonstrates that splenic haemangiomata may be a cause of haemolytic anaemia in the absence of abnormalities in coagulation.

The authors review environmental and neurodevelopmental risk factors for schizophrenic disorders, with emphasis on minor physical anomalies, particularly craniofacial anomalies and dermatoglyphic variations. The high prevalence of these anomalies among schizophrenic subjects supports the neurodevelopmental theory of the etiology of schizophrenia, since they suggest either genetically or epigene...
