The process of determining which disease or condition explains a person’s symptoms and signs can be very complicated and may be inaccurate in some cases. The general belief is that diagnosing diseases relies on doctors’ keen intuition, rich experience and professional equipment. In this work, we employ ideas from recent advances in plantar pressure research and from the powerful capacity of the...

We consider the situation where a number of firms decide their individual capacity investment levels. The total sum of these levels determines the total return, which the firms share in proportion to their contributions. Prior to their commitments, firms may spend efforts on learning a size indicator of the market. Using this model, we can explain the over-capacity phenomenon that appeared time...

Abstract: A new chaotic memory search model based on associative dynamics using features in stored patterns is proposed. In the present paper, two kinds of features are considered; external and internal ones. The former is assigned by a designer and the latter is automatically assigned by competitive learning. The control of chaotic and static states is realized using a presynaptic inhibition m...

Peptide-protein interactions have critical roles in biology. Monitoring peptide-protein interactions plays an important role in investigating molecular recognition, screening drugs, and designing biosensors. In this paper, we develop a novel fluorescent approach to monitor peptide-protein interactions based on the assembly of pyrene-labeled peptide and graphene oxide (GO). The pyrene-labeled pe...

It is shown that the work function algorithm for the 2-evader problem has competitive ratio m ? 2 for all metric spaces with m points. This settles the k-server conjecture for metric spaces with k+2 points.

An online domain-independent competitive gaming system, called JOYCE, was devised to engage students in drill-and-practice exercises. In this paper, theories underpinning the system design are explained. As in the system students are allowed to compete with others in a face-to-face situation, and in network situations where an opponent’s identify is revealed or concealed, a preliminary study wa...

We study an online model of fair division designed to capture features of a real world charity problem. We consider two simple mechanisms for this model in which agents simply declare what items they like. We analyse axiomatic properties of these mechanisms such as strategy-proofness and envy freeness. Finally, we perform a competitive analysis and compute the price of anarchy.

In this paper we investigate parallel searching on m concurrent rays. We assume that a target t is located somewhere on one of the rays and that a group of m point robots has to reach t. Furthermore, we assume that the robots have no way of communicating over distance. Given a strategy S we are interested in the competitive ratio which is deened as the ratio of the time needed by the robots usi...

This paper studies competitive equilibria in economies characterized by the presence of asymmetric information, where non-exclusive contracts are traded on competitive markets and agents may be privately informed over their payoff. For such economies competitive equilibria may not exist when contracts trade at linear prices. We show that (non-trivial) competitive equilibria exist, under general...

One aim of laboratory investigation in neonatal jaundice is to prevent kernicterus from occurring. Estimation of the bilirubin-binding capacity of serum is an important measurement along with total bilirubin determination. With a convenient Sephadex competitive binding procedure, KERNLUTE provides information on whether or not the neonate's bilirubin-binding capacity has been exceeded. Further ...
