We introduce a new class of cooperative games by using the notion of local supermodularity. Therefore locally convex games can be considered as relaxations of convex games. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of a subclass of locally concave games in terms of the rank function of a matroid.

This paper presents a duality theory for solving concave minimization problem and nonconvex quadratic programming problem subjected to nonlinear inequality constraints. By use of the canonical dual transformation developed recently, two canonical dual problems are formulated, respectively. These two dual problems are perfectly dual to the primal problems with zero duality gap. It is proved that...

The purpose of this study is to develop a flexible matching method for recognizing handwritten numerals based on the statistics of shapes and structures learned from learning samples. In the recognition method we reported before, there were problems in matching of the feature points and evaluation of matching. To solve them, we propose a new matching method supplementing contour orientations wi...

Given a set of n points (nodes) on a line and a set of m weighted intervals defined on the nodes, we consider a particular dynamic programming (DP) problem on these intervals. If the weight function of the DP has convex or concave property, we can solve this DP problem efficiently by using matrix searching in Monge matrices, together with a new query data structure, which we call the consecutiv...

We prove that the multifractal decomposition behaves as expected for a family of sets K known as digraph recursive fractals, using measures ^ of Markov type. For each value of a parameter a between a minimum amin and maximum amax, we define 'multifractal components' K^ a) of K, and show that they are fractals in the sense of Taylor. The dimension /(or) of K^ is computed from the data of the pro...

Concave compositions are ordered partitions whose parts are decreasing towards a central part. We study the distribution modulo a of the number of concave compositions. Let c(n) be the number of concave compositions of n having even length. It is easy to see that c(n) is even for all n 1. Refining this fact, we prove that #{n < X : c(n) ⌘ 0 (mod 4)} p X and also that for every a > 2 and at leas...

In this paper, we develop two algorithms for globally optimizing a special class of linear programs with an additional concave constraint. We assume that the concave constraint is defined by a separable concave function. Exploiting this special structure, we apply Falk-Soland’s branch-and-bound algorithm for concave minimization in both direct and indirect manners. In the direct application, we...

We investigate the problem of designing a minimum-cost flow network interconnecting n sources and a single sink, each with known locations in a normed space and with associated flow demands. The network may contain any finite number of additional unprescribed nodes from the space; these are known as the Steiner points. For concave increasing cost functions, a minimum cost network of this sort h...

In this paper we look at polynomials arising from statistics on the classes of involutions, In, and involutions with no fixed points, Jn, in the symmetric group. Our results are motivated by F. Brenti’s conjecture [3] which states that the Eulerian distribution of In is logconcave. Symmetry of the generating functions is shown for the statistics d, maj and the joint distribution (d, maj). We sh...

we provide a continuous representation of quasi-concave mappings by their upper level sets. A possible motivation is the extension to quasi-concave mappings of a result by Ulam and Hyers, which states that every approximately convex mapping can be approximated by a convex mapping. Keyword: quasi-concave, upper level set AMS classification: 47N10
