A new strategy is established for detecting chiral amino acids based on the electron transfer from hemoglobin Fe(II) to Cu(II) in copper complexes of the amino acids. The sensor shows a highly selective recognition of arginine enantiomers.

Heteroleptic bis(dipyrrinato)copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes are synthesized. Their structures are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, and their properties are investigated by using cyclic voltammetry, chronocoulometry, and UV/vis absorption spectroscopy.

In order to mimic the active center of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), we synthesized a pentadecapeptide (Ac-KAHEFGHSLGLDHSK-NH2) corresponding to the catalytic zinc(II) binding site of human MMP-13. The multi-domain structural organization of MMPs fundamentally determines their metal binding affinity, catalytic activity and selectivity. Our potentiometric, UV-visible, CD, EPR, NMR, mass spec...

Redox mediators play a major role determining the photocurrent and the photovoltage in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). To maintain the photocurrent, the reduction of oxidized dye by the redox mediator should be significantly faster than the electron back transfer between TiO2 and the oxidized dye. The driving force for dye regeneration with the redox mediator should be sufficiently low to pr...

Transition metal complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal ions with general stoichiometry [M(L)X]X and [M(L)SO(4)], where M = Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), L = 3,3'-thiodipropionic acid bis(4-amino-5-ethylimino-2,3-dimethyl-1-phenyl-3-pyrazoline) and X = NO(3)(-), Cl(-) and OAc(-), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance measurements, magne...

In this paper we present a first insight into the cytotoxic action mode of copper(I) iodide or copper(I) thiocyanate complexes with a phosphine derivative of sparfloxacin (a 3rd generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic agent) and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-biquinoline as auxiliary ligands. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the new complexes was tested against two cancer cell lines (...

Copper(II) complexes of a novel pyrazole containing porphyrinogen and cobalt(III) and zinc(II) complexes of a pyrazole containing tripodal ligand having N-donor atoms have been investigated. 5-Methyl-3-formylpyrazole (MPA) on reaction with copper(II) nitrate or perchlorate in the presence of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) forms novel pyrazole-based porphyrinogen complexes [Cu(T(3)-porphyrinogen...

X- and Q-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was used to characterize polycrystalline Cu(II) complexes that contained sodium 5-sulfonate salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazones possessing a hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, or phenyl substituent at the terminal nitrogen. The ability of thiosemicarbazone proligands to generate superoxide radical anions and hydroxyl radicals upon their expo...
