Since its first announcement by P. Sensi et at. in 19591}, the rifamycin complex has been extensively studied by a number of workers2). The type culture Nocardia mediterranea (Margalith et Beretta) Thiemann et at. 1969*, then known as Streptomyces mediterranei^ was isolated from a soil sample collected in France. Sugawara et al.l) culturing an isolate (4107 A2) from a Japanese soil sample, repo...

Actinomyces neuii has until now not been described as a pathogen associated with periprosthetic infection in total joint replacement. The case presented here suggests that A. neuii subsp. neuii is a causative pathogen. The discussion and review of the literature indicate the impact that detection of Actinomyces species could have.

Human (n = 33) and canine (n = 53) Campylobacter upsaliensis isolates from seven countries were genotyped by a new amplified fragment length polymorphism method. We observed 100% typeability and high overall diversity. The majority of human strains (23/33) clustered separately from canine strains, indicating that dogs may not be the main source of human infection.

Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of plague, a fulminant disease that is often fatal without antimicrobial treatment. Plasmid (IncA/C)-mediated multidrug resistance in Y. pestis was reported in 1995 in Madagascar and has generated considerable public health concern, most recently because of the identification of IncA/C multidrug-resistant plasmids in other zoonotic pathogens. Here, we demo...

Actinomyces glycerinitolerans strain G10T, which was isolated from sheep rumen fluid, can metabolize a range of substrates, including complex carbohydrates to organic acids (OAs). Here, we report a 3.69-Mbp draft genome of Actinomyces glycerinitolerans.

Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. bolletii is a rapidly growing mycobacterial organism for which the taxonomy is unclear. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of a Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. bolletii type strain. This sequence will provide essential information for future taxonomic and comparative genome studies of these mycobacteria.

INTRODUCTION Evidence suggests that giardiasis is a zoonotic disease. The present work aimed to evaluate the genetic identity of Giardia duodenalis isolated from human and dog fecal samples from Belo Horizonte. METHODS Human and dog fecal samples were cultured for isolation of G. duodenalis. To determine the genotype of the isolates, primers that amplify a specific region in rRNA of the proto...

Molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium spp.oocysts in clinical samples is useful for public health since it allows the study of sources of contamination as well as the transmission in different geographical regions. Although widely used in developed countries, in Brazil it is restricted to academic studies, mostly using commercial kits for the extraction of genomic DNA, or in collaborati...

We sequenced the genome of Listeria ivanovii strain G770, which caused a deadly infection of the thoracic aortic prosthesis of a 78-year-old man. The 2.9 Mb genome exhibited 21 specific genes among L. ivanovii strains, including five genes encoding a type I restriction modification system and one glycopeptide resistance gene.

Mucoid strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus were isolated from the stools of two asymptomatic carriers and a patient with gastroenteritis. The strains demonstrated biochemical reactions and antibiotic susceptibility typical of nonmucoid strains of V. parahaemolyticus isolated locally. The slime substance was typed by coagglutination and was antigenically similar to the capsular antigen of the sam...
