The effect of viscous damping and yielding, on the reduction of the seismic responses of steel buildings modeled as three-dimensional (3D) complex multidegree of freedom (MDOF) systems, is studied. The reduction produced by damping may be larger or smaller than that of yielding. This reduction can significantly vary from one structural idealization to another and is smaller for global than for ...
We study stochastic resonance (SR) in an oscillator with nonlinear noise, fractional-order external damping, and fractional-order intrinsic damping. Using a moment equation, we derive the exact analytical expression of the output amplitude and find that fluctuations in the output amplitude are non-monotonic. Using numerical simulations we verify the accuracy of this analytical result. We find (...
In single stage valves, the main spools are stroked directly by solenoid actuators. They are cheaper and more reliable than multistage valves. Their use, however, is restricted to low bandwidth and low flow rate applications due to the limitation of the solenoid actuators. Our research focuses on alleviating the need for large solenoids in single stage valves by advantageously using fluid flow ...
A modified Carlson-Langer model for earthquakes is proposed, which includes nonlinear viscoelasticity. Several aftershocks are generated after the main shock owing to the damping of the additional viscoelastic force. Both the Gutenberg-Richter law and Omori's law are reproduced in a numerical simulation of the modified Carlson-Langer model on a critical percolation cluster of a square lattice.
We consider a class of ordinary differential equations describing one-dimensional systems with a quasi-periodic forcing term and in the presence of large damping. We discuss the conditions to be assumed on the mechanical force and the forcing term for the existence of quasi-periodic solutions which have the same frequency vector as the forcing.
In this paper we consider a plate equation with internal feedback and viscoelastic damping localized on a part of the boundary. Without imposing restrictive assumptions on the time-dependent frictional damping, we establish an explicit and general decay rate result that allows a wider class of relaxation functions and generalizes previous results existing in the literature.
We characterize well-posedness in Hölder spaces for an abstract version of the equation (∗) u′′ + λu′′′ = c(∆u + μ∆u′) + f which model the vibrations of flexible structures possessing internal material damping and external force f . As a consequence, we show that in case of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions, equation (*) is always well-posed provided 0 < λ < μ.
