BACKGROUND Dengue is a disease of great complexity, due to interactions between humans, mosquitoes and various virus serotypes as well as efficient vector survival strategies. Thus, understanding the factors influencing the persistence of the disease has been a challenge for scientists and policy makers. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of various factors related to humans ...
BACKGROUND Dengue Fever presents a significant and growing burden of disease to endemic countries, where children are at particular risk. Worldwide, no effective anti-viral treatment has been identified, thus vector control is key for disease prevention, particularly in Peru where no vaccine is currently available. This qualitative study aimed to explore the perceptions of dengue control in car...
BACKGROUND Aedes mosquitoes in Taiwan mainly comprise Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti. However, the species contributing to autochthonous dengue spread and the extent at which it occurs remain unclear. Thus, in this study, we spatially analyzed real data to determine spatial features related to local dengue incidence and mosquito density, particularly that of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti. ...
A model with six mutually-exclusive compartments related to Dengue disease is presented. In this model there are three vector control tools: insecticides (larvicide and adulticide) and mechanical control. The problem is studied using an Optimal Control (OC) approach. The human data for the model is based on the Cape Verde Dengue outbreak. Some control measures are simulated and their consequenc...
The susceptibility of Aedes albolateralis to nocturnally subperiodic Wuchereria bancrofti and dengue type 2 virus was investigated by using artificial membrane feeding and intrathoracic inoculation techniques, respectively. The results indicated that Ae. albolateralis was susceptible to nocturnally subperiodic W. bancrofti (susceptibility rate = 9.43%) and dengue type 2 virus (susceptibility ra...
Dengue prevention efforts rely on control of virus vectors. We investigated use of insecticide-treated screens permanently affixed to windows and doors in Mexico and found that the screens significantly reduced infestations of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in treated houses. Our findings demonstrate the value of this method for dengue virus vector control.
Dengue, a disease found in most tropical and subtropical areas of the world. It has become the most common arboviral disease of humans. This disease is caused by any of four serotypes of dengue virus (DEN1-DEN4). In many endemic countries, the average age of getting dengue infection is shifting upwards, dengue in pregnancy and infancy are likely to be encountered more frequently. The dynamics o...
Dengue vaccines are currently in development and policymakers need appropriate economic studies to determine their potential financial and public health impact. We searched five databases (PubMed, EMBASE, LILAC, EconLit, and WHOLIS) to identify health economics studies of dengue. Forty-three manuscripts were identified that provided primary data: 32 report economic burden of dengue and nine are...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Dengue is an important public health problem in Yogyakarta city, Indonesia. The aim of this study was to build an innovative community-centered dengue-ecosystem management intervention in the city and to assess the process and results. METHODS For describing the baseline situation, entomological surveys and household surveys were carried out in six randomly selected ...
Mosquitoes belong to the family Culicidae within the order Diptera[1]. There are approximately 3 400 species and 42 genera in the world[2]. It transmits a number of diseases, such as malaria, filariasis, dengue, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever etc., causing millions of deaths every year[3]. Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti) is a vector of dengue and yellow fever while these diseases are widely di...
