In this study, a mixture of [Zn(2)(1,3-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]benzene)](4+) ([Zn(2)(BBPAB)](4+)) and 11-mercaptoundecylphosphoric acid functionalized gold nanoparticles (Phos-AuNPs) is shown to be a highly sensitive colorimetric probe that can easily detect pyrophosphate (PPi) at less than 200 nM with the naked eye.

Rat CD39, a membrane-bound ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase that hydrolyzes extracellular nucleoside tri- and diphosphates, is anchored to the membrane by two transmembrane domains at the two ends of the molecule. The transmembrane domains are important for enzymatic activity, as mutants lacking one or both of these domains have a fraction of the enzymatic activity of the wild-typ...

This communication describes the partial purification of an enzyme in Escherichia coli that is capable of a low-energy transfer of organically bound phosphate to nucleosides, nucleoside 5'-phosphates, and deoxyribonucleoside 5'-triphosphates. With the exception of adenosine, the nucleosides give rise almost exclusively to 2'- and 3'-nucleotides. Thymidine and its derivatives are the best accept...

Not only in bacteria but also in plant cells, guanosine-3',5'-tetraphosphate (ppGpp) is an important signaling molecule, that affects various cellular processes. In this study, we identified nucleoside diphosphates linked to some moiety X (Nudix) hydrolases, AtNUDX11, 15, 25, and 26, having ppGpp pyrophosphohydrolase activity from Arabidopsis plants. Among these, AtNUDX26 localized in chloropla...

A simple stereochemical framework for understanding RNA structure has remained elusive to date. We present a comprehensive conformational map for two nucleoside-5',3'-diphosphates and for a truncated dinucleotide derived from a grid search of all potential conformers using hard sphere steric exclusion criteria to define allowed conformers. The eight-dimensional conformational space is presented...

A poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) decorated bis(terpyridine) zinc coordination polymer acts as an anion-responsive material in 100% aqueous solution. Depending on the binding and association constants to Zn(II), the addition of different anions leads to increased emission intensity and/or a shift of the emission wavelength. The sensor was addressed with a collection of common salts to survey the se...

It was shown that rat liver contains a series of dolichols with chain lengths of from 17 (or possibly 16) to 21 isoprene residues, the main constituent of the mixture being dolichol-18. By using double-labelled radioactive mevalonates it was demonstrated that each of these dolichols possesses three biogenetically trans-isoprene residues and that the remaining residues are biogenetically cis, su...
