Since their inception, distributional models of semantics have been criticized as inadequate cognitive theories of human semantic learning and representation. A principal challenge is that the representations derived by distributional models are purely symbolic and are not grounded in perception and action; this challenge has led many to favor feature-based models of semantic representation. We...

We confront existing definitions of chaos with the state of the art in topological dynamics. The article does not propose any new definition of chaos but, starting from several topological properties that can be reasonably called chaotic, tries to sketch a theoretical view of chaos. Among the main ideas in this article are the distinction between overall chaos and partial chaos, and the fact th...

The aim of this article is twofold: (1). develop a strategy to prove the existence of chaos in weakly quasilinear systems, (2). strengthen the existing results on chaos in partial differential equations. First, we study a sineGordon equation containing weakly quasilinear terms, and existence of chaos is proved. Then, we study a Ginzburg-Landau equation containing weakly quasilinear terms, and e...

Chaos criterion for quantum field theory is proposed. Its accordance with classical chaos criterion is demonstrated in the semi-classical limit of quantum mechanics. Originally phenomenon of chaos was associated with problems of classical mechanics and statistical physics. Attempt of substantiation of statistical mechanics initiated intensive study of chaos and uncover its basic properties main...

Inequality measurement involves explicit or implicit value judgements. The subjective approach to inequality measurement is a relatively new and fast-developing area which focueses direct attention on these judgements. It is "subjective" in the sense that it takes account of people's views on distributional comparisons. This paper surveys some of the principal contributions of recent years.

Compositional Distributional Semantics Models (CDSMs) are traditionally seen as an entire different world with respect to Tree Kernels (TKs). In this paper, we show that under a suitable regime these two approaches can be regarded as the same and, thus, structural information and distributional semantics can successfully cooperate in CSDMs for NLP tasks. Leveraging on distributed trees, we pres...

Formal and distributional semantic models offer complementary benefits in modeling meaning. The categorical compositional distributional model of meaning of Coecke et al. (2010) (abbreviated to DisCoCat in the title) combines aspects of both to provide a general framework in which meanings of words, obtained distributionally, are composed using methods from the logical setting to form sentence ...

We present a flexible method that rearranges the ranked output of compound splitters (i.e., decomposers of one-word compounds such as the German Kinderlied ‘children’s song’) using a distributional semantics model. In an experiment, we show that our re-ranker improves the quality of various compound splitters.
