Using a bit string model, we show that asexual reproduction for diploids is more efficient than for haploids: it improves genetic material producing new individuals with less deleterious mutations. We also see that in a system where competition is present, diploids dominate, even though we consider some dominant loci.

A gene encoding phospholipase D (PLD) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was identified. The 195 kDa product of PLD1 has 24% overall sequence identity with a plant PLD. Expression of yeast PLD activity was eliminated by one-step gene disruption. Yeast haploids lacking PLD activity were deficient in growth on non-fermentable carbon sources. Diploids lacking expression of PLD1 were unable to sporulate.
Haploids bearing the dominant UAG suppressor, SUP7-a, and various alleles of the omnipotent suppressor sup35 were examined. The presence of the UAG suppressor reduced the efficiency of some alleles of sup35, and caused other sup35 alleles to be lethal. A nonclassical interaction of the dominant suppressor tRNA and the ribosome is proposed to explain these observations.
