BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Age-related iron accumulation in extrapyramidal nuclei causes T2 shortening, which may result in decreased signal intensity in these areas on MR images. Because the dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced technique uses heavily T2*- or T2-weighted images, the iron-induced susceptibility may have direct impact on perfusion imaging. The purpose of this study was to assess ...

We report the case of a 26-year-old man with precursor T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis that was diagnosed on the basis of MR imaging findings and was proved post mortem. In our MR imaging studies, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images and diffusion-weighted echo-planar images clearly depicted bilateral involvement of the medial temporal ...

In this study, we compared the effectiveness of b0 echo-planar MR images (EPI) imaging with gradient recalled echo (GRE) in detecting acute hemorrhage. Brain images in 69 patients who suffered from acute infarction were reviewed. Nine of them had suffered from acute hemorrhage. Comparing b0EPI and GRE images side-by-side, we found no significant different effectiveness in detecting hemorrhage (...

We used live-animal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the gallbladders of male mice. These healthy mice were fasted overnight before the study and anesthetized in an animal chamber, with a gas mixture of oxygen and isoflurane for small animal MRI. In the course of these live-animal MRI studies, we observed a Phrygian cap appearance to the gallbladder of one healthy-appearing 6-week-ol...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) encounters fundamental limits in circumstances in which the static magnetic field is not sufficiently strong to truncate unwanted, so-called concomitant components of the gradient field. This limitation affects the attainable optimal image fidelity and resolution most prominently in low-field imaging. In this article, we introduce the use of pulsed magnetic-fiel...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used widely in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Innovative MRI techniques have been developed for MSK imaging. This review discusses the advantages and challenges of the cutting-edge technology of MSK MRI (both hardware and software) as well as its clinical application.

Nasolabial cysts are uncommon nonodontogenic lesions that occur in the nasal alar region. These lesions usually present with asymptomatic swelling but can cause pain if infected. In this case report, we describe the inadequacy of conventional radiography in a nasolabial cyst case, as well as the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography (US) findings in a 54-year-old female patient.

New techniques for imaging of brain function are described, which utilize magnetic resonance imaging. Echo-planar imaging (EPI), the preferred method, is introduced and technical issues are discussed. Two recent approaches for measurement of blood flow are explained: contrast agent bolus tracking and black blood perfusion. An intrinsic contrast technique, which utilizes the paramagnetism of deo...

We present anatomic and acoustic data from a pilot study on the Finnish vowels [A, e, i, o, u, y, æ, ø]. The data were acquired simultaneously with 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a custom built sound recording system. The data consist of a single static repetition of each vowel with constant f0. The imaging sequence was 7.6 s long and had an isotropic voxel size of 1.8 mm. We report re...
