OBJECTIVES To address the safety (rate of thromboembolic events and circuit complications) and efficacy (rate of bleeding control) of recombinant activated coagulation factor VII (rFVIIa) to treat severe bleeding refractory to all surgical and medical treatments in patients under veno-arterial (VA) or veno-venous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. METHODS In a tertiary r...

BACKGROUND Previous studies have demonstrated the safety of flexible bronchoscopy (FB) in mechanically ventilated subjects. However, the safety of FB in adult subjects receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has not been described previously. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of all adult subjects who underwent FB while receiving ECMO support at the University of Alaba...

BACKGROUND We investigated the relationship between neurological outcomes and duration from cardiac arrest (CA) to the initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) (CA-to-ECMO) in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) treated with extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) and determined the ideal time at which ECPR should be performed. METHODS During the ti...

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used in the management of neonates with life-threatening cardiorespiratory diseases since 19821. Several studies have demonstrated that ECMO promotes normal survival in neonates with respiratory failure2-4. After decades of discussion, ECMO is now well accepted as a standard of treatment for neonatal respiratory failure refractory to conventio...

BACKGROUND Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a supportive therapy and its success depends on optimal drug therapy along with other supportive care. Emerging evidence suggests significant interactions between the drug and the device resulting in altered pharmacokinetics (PK) of vital drugs which may be further complicated by the PK changes that occur in the context of critical illnes...

The history of ECMO and the development of its present-day use is discussed. The results of the National ECMO Registry and the first 100 patients at Children's Hospital National Medical Center are presented. Future developments and directions of ECMO are presented.

This questionnaire study was designed to determine how consultant paediatricians perceived the value of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the treatment of meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS). A significant number believed that the survival of infants with MAS who received ECMO was lower than reported. Early discussion with an ECMO centre will ensure appropriate timing of referral.

This pictorial review provides the principles of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support and associated CT imaging features with emphasis on the hemodynamic changes and possible imaging pitfalls encountered. It is important that radiologists in ECMO centers apply well-designed imaging protocols and familiarize themselves with post-contrast CT imaging findings in patients on ECMO.

BACKGROUND Infants requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support represent a high risk group in terms of cerebral injury. Mild hypothermia both during and after cerebral hypoxic ischaemia appears to be a promising strategy for offering neuroprotection. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether mild hypothermia was both feasible and safe in infants receiving ECMO as a prelude to any form...

RATIONALE Studies have demonstrated that bone marrow-derived cells can be recruited to injured lungs through an unknown mechanism. We hypothesize that marrow progenitors are mobilized into the circulation of patients with cardiac and/or respiratory failure, and may then traffic to and incorporate into the sites of tissue injury. OBJECTIVES To determine whether progenitor populations are incre...
