It is well known that certain pathological conditions result in a decrease of red blood cells (RBCs) deformability and subsequently can significantly alter the blood flow in microcirculation, which may block capillaries and cause ischemia in the tissues. Microfluidic systems able to obtain reliable quantitative measurements of RBC deformability hold the key to understand and diagnose RBC relate...

We present SuperDARN radar observations of the ionospheric flow during a well-observed high-latitude substorm which occurred during steady northward IMF conditions on 2 December 1999. These data clearly demonstrate the excitation of large-scale flow associated with the substorm expansion phase, with enhanced equatorward flows being observed in the pre-midnight local time sector of the expansion...

Optic flow generated by rigid surface patches can be decomposed into a small number of elementary motion types. In these experiments, we show that the human visual system can evaluate expansion, one of these motion types, metrically. Moreover, we show that the discrimination of rates of expansion are spatially local. Because the estimation of the focus of expansion is somewhat imprecise, this l...

Since the transport of biological fluids through contracting or expanding vessels is characterized by low seepage Reynolds numbers, the current study focuses on the viscous flow driven by small wall contractions and expansions of two weakly permeable walls. The scope is limited to two-dimensional symmetrical solutions inside a simulated channel with moving porous walls. In seeking an exact solu...

When an expansion flow field of moving dots is overlapped by planar motion, observers perceive an illusory displacement of the focus of expansion (FOE) in the direction of the planar The illusion may be a consequence of induced motion, wherein an induced component of motion relative to planar dots is added to the motions of expansion dots to produce the FOE shift. Such a process could be mediat...

When a heat exchanger in a Fast Breeder Reactor cracks, highly pressurized water or steam escapes into the surrounding liquid sodium. A sodium-water reaction then occurs, forming disodium oxide (and hydrogen gas). It can cause secondary damages to the heat exchangers by the reaction heat and erosion corrosion. The released flow of steam from the cracks of the heat exchanger is an underexpanded ...

We present a method to compute surface expansion rates from sequences of range data. Towards this end the 3D velocity field (range flow) is extracted first and then used in a second step to estimate the local area expansion. A detailed performance analysis is presented and the method is applied on two real examples.
