The distribution of acetylcholinesterase (ACHe) in the twitch fibers of the extraocular muscles of the mouse was examined by light and electron microscope autoradiography after labeling with radioactive diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP) with, and without, 2-pyridine aldoxime methiodide (2-PAM) reactivation. The values obtained were compared with those previously reported for the diaphragm and s...
O phthalmologists are, and should be, proud of the advances in cataract surgery and aphakic correction that have occurred over the past two decades. Today, cataract surgery is considered one of the most successful surgical procedures performed throughout the world. The resulting quality of vision is usually excellent and the complication rate reasonably low. One postoperative complication, dipl...
Physiological and behavioral rhythms are governed by an endogenous circadian clock. The response of the human circadian clock to extraocular light exposure was monitored by measurement of body temperature and melatonin concentrations throughout the circadian cycle before and after light pulses presented to the popliteal region (behind the knee). A systematic relation was found between the timin...
We present a case of anterior migration of a solid silicone band through a lateral rectus muscle. In this patient the action of the lateral rectus was preserved, and this is demonstrated photographically. The possible reasons for this rare complication and the possible mechanism by which lateral rectus activity remained intact are explained.
Chawla B, et al. BMJ Case Rep 2017. doi:10.1136/bcr-2016-218471 Description A 13-month-old female child was brought to our tertiary eye hospital with a history of a rapidly enlarging mass in the right eye for 4 months. Her medical history was suggestive of leukocoria in the right eye, noted 6 months ago, for which medical attention was sought elsewhere. At that time, a diagnosis of group E reti...
To study the clinical presentation and treatment outcome among children in South Western China with retinoblastoma (RB) and to determine factors predictive of poor outcome.A retrospective review of children diagnosed with RB from 2006 to 2015 at West China Hospital was undertaken. Demographic and clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes were studied.A total of 253 patients (unilateral 80...
PURPOSE Infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) is often associated with abnormalities of axonal outgrowth and connectivity. To determine if this manifests in extraocular muscle innervation, specimens from children with idiopathic INS or INS and albinism were examined and compared to normal age-matched control extraocular muscles. METHODS Extraocular muscles removed during normal surgery on childr...
Purpose To determine whether structural protein composition and expression of key regulatory genes are altered in strabismic human extraocular muscles. Methods Samples from strabismic horizontal extraocular muscles were obtained during strabismus surgery and compared with normal muscles from organ donors. We used proteomics, standard and customized PCR arrays, and microarrays to identify chan...
PURPOSE Weak eye muscles can cause ophthalmic disorders, and in particular, strabismus. Exogenous trophic factors such as cardiotrophin (CT)-1 and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) have been shown to increase the contractile force of adult heart and skeletal muscles, respectively. In the current study, the effects of endogenous and exogenous trophic factors on extraocular muscle strength and mas...
