In 2002 the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) convened a panel of breast cancer experts and patient advocates to develop consensus recommendations for diagnosing breast cancer in countries with limited resources. The panel agreed on the need for a pathologic diagnosis, based on microscopic evaluation of tissue specimens, before initiating breast cancer treatment. The panel discussed option...

BACKGROUND The liver is the most frequent site of metastatic disease, and metastatic disease to the liver is far more common than primary liver carcinoma in the United States. Pathologic evaluation of biopsy samples is key to establishing a correct diagnosis for patient management. Morphologic and immunoperoxidase studies, which are the standard for pathologic practice, accurately classify most...

This article precises the technical conditions of fine-needle aspiration, elements of microscopical analyses which establish the diagnostic, complementary technics, specially immunocytochemistry that could enhance the performance. Limits and worrisome histologic changes following fine needle aspiration are also discussed. Fine needle aspiration results are discussed. The text is fully illustrated.

Background and Objectives:Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is one of the methods of breast biopsy which is fast, easy and cost effective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concordance rate between pathologic results of sonography or stereotaxy guided FNAB and guided core needle biopsy (CNB) in the evaluation of breast le...

The recent report on fine needle aspiration was very interesting. Akhavan-Moghadam noted that “fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a useful atraumatic diagnostic technique with high diagnostic accuracy, which can provide a highly sensitive and low false positive diagnosis in patients with nonthyroidal masses” (1). It is interesting to discuss the diagnostic properties of FNA and its harmfulness. Ac...

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a well-established minimally invasive technique for the cytologic evaluation of suspicious mass lesions involving lymph nodes and other organs. The 2008 WHO classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues utilizes a multiparametric approach based on cytomorphologic, immunophenotypic, and cytogenetic features to classify these tumors (1). This appro...

Fine needle aspiration cytology is an inexpensive, atraumatic technique for the diagnosis of disease sites. This paper describes the technique and illustrates how it may be applied to the management of tumours throughout the body. The limitations of the method, the dangers of false positive reports, and the inevitability of false negative diagnoses are emphasised. In a clinical context the meth...

The recent advances in pancreas cytology specimen sampling methods have enabled a specific cytologic diagnosis in most cases. Proper triage and processing of the cytologic specimen is pivotal in making a diagnosis due to the need for ancillary testing in addition to cytological evaluation, which is especially true in the diagnosis of pancreatic cysts. Newly proposed terminology for pancreaticob...
