OBJECTIVE To determine the accuracy of frozen section in the diagnosis of breast lump. METHODS Frozen section diagnosis given in consecutive breast biopsies performed in 5 years in our laboratory was evaluated against the final pathology report of permanent sections. RESULTS The Aga Khan University Hospital Lab receives more than 400 cases per year for frozen section. Three hundred and nine...

BACKGROUND Processing multiple tissue sections in large Mohs cases is time consuming and labor intensive. OBJECTIVE To present innovative laboratory techniques to facilitate processing of large Mohs cases. METHODS A method for processing a large dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans Mohs case is outlined. RESULTS Modifications in tissue processing and equipment employed in a large Mohs case are...

BACKGROUND Human breastmilk provides the best nutrition for infants. When women or infants have difficulties in breastfeeding directly, breastmilk is usually pumped and frozen for later use. However, while frozen, breastmilk may develop a rancid flavor, which induces infant feeding stress and raises the mothers' concerns about the quality of frozen breastmilk. Nevertheless, few studies have inv...

Cumulative pregnancy rate has been significantly increased since frozen-thawed embryo transfer was applied in ART cycles. This method has become an essential part of IVF/ICSI treatment. Luteal phase support has been proven to be associated with higher rate of live birth rate. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), and progestrone have been successfully used for luteal phase support in ovarian stim...

We found that a cold acclimation protein from an ice-nucleating bacterium, lhtoea ananas KUIN-3, has refolding actiyity on frozen denatured protein. Based on a SDS-PAGE analysis, we confirmed that the co]d shock-treated cells of strain KUIN-3 could produce some cold acclimation proteins that inhibit their syntheses by the addition of chloramphenicol during the cold acclimation. Among such prote...

We define a modification of the Erdős-Rényi random graph process which can be regarded as the mean field frozen percolation process. We describe the behavior of the process using differential equations and investigate their solutions in order to show the self-organized critical and extremum properties of the critical frozen percolation model. We prove two limit theorems about the distribution o...

Frozen blood is most easily and economically prepared using high glycerol (40 percent). Storage is at —80° in a mechanical freezer. Thawing must be rapid and washing can be carried out with low electrolyte sugar solutions and agglomeration or with high electrolyte solutions and continuous flow centrif ugation. These processed cells have many advantages not found in raw routinely stored blood. ...

causes are many: examination must include the glenohumeral joint, the sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular joints, and scapular rotation on the chest wall to distinguish the various conditions. These include arthritis of synovial joints, inflammation of bursae, inflammation and sometimes calcific deposits in the supraspinatus tendon, other rotator cuff lesions, and bicipital tendonitis. Parti...

Fifty-six patients with frozen shoulder have had their personality profiles investigated by means of the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire. Females showed significantly increased somatic anxiety compared with controls. It is suggested that this may be important both to aetiology and treatment. Males and females should be assessed separately in future studies of frozen shoulder.

A relatively simple method for obtaining ultrathin, frozen sections for electron microscopy has been developed. Tissues, cultured cells, and bacteria may be employed. They are fixed in 1.25-4% glutaraldehyde for 1-4 hr, are washed overnight in buffer at 3°C, and are embedded in 20% thiolated gelatin or pure gelatin. Before sectioning they are partially dehydrated in 50% glycerol, frozen in liqu...
