. Demonstrate an understanding of the natural history and manifestations of reflux disease . Evaluate the role of diagnostic testing such as endoscopy, esophageal manometry, ambulatory pH monitoring, and impedance-pH monitoring in the management of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease . Evaluate the options for treatment of patients with complicated and uncomplicated reflux disease.
Diagnosis History. If classic symptoms of heartburn and acid regurgitation dominate a patient’s history, then they can help establish the diagnosis of GERD with sufficiently high specificity, although sensitivity remains low compared to 24-hour pH monitoring. The presence of atypical symptoms (Table 1), although common, cannot sufficiently support the clinical diagnosis of GERD [B*]. Testing....
A potential reduction in symptoms related to atrial fibrillation after treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms with proton pump inhibitor therapy has been previously described. However, illustration of this relationship by combined 24-hour pH and ambulatory Holter monitoring has not been performed. We report 3 patients with symptoms of both palpitations and reflux who underwent si...
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common esophageal diseases in developed countries. It is widely believed that GERD symptoms are caused by acid refluxate within the esophagus, so ambulatory 24 hour pH-monitoring became the gold standard in detecting gastroesophageal reflux. Traditional ambulatory pH monitoring is unable to detect a gastroesophageal reflux with pH >4. Th...

OBJECTIVE To review the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults with esophageal complications (esophagitis, stricture, adenocarcinoma, or Barrett metaplasia) or extraesophageal complications (otolaryngological manifestations and asthma). DATA SOURCES Peer-reviewed publications located via MEDLINE or cross-citation. STUDY SELECTION Emphasis was placed on new developmen...
Transient lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxation (TLESR) is defined as LES relaxation without a swallow. TLESRs are observed in both of the normal individuals and the patients with gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD). However, TLESR is widely considered as the major mechanism of the GERD. The new equipments such as high resolution manometry and impedance pH study is helped to understan...
PURPOSE Studies of endoscopic application of radiofrequency energy to the lower esophageal sphincter for gastroesophageal reflux control have produced conflicting reports of its effectiveness. This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and cohort studies to assess the impact of this treatment. METHODS Twenty studies were included. Outcomes analyzed included ga...
Gastroesophageal reflux is a common sufferance among infants’ specially premature ones. We present a retrospective study over a two years period on newborns and infants admitted at the Childrens’Hospital Braşov for vomiting and regurgitation. We have used modern diagnosing techniques and treatment. Their overall outcome was good.
