Xenopus laevis tadpoles that arrest development and remain as larvae for several years sometimes occur spontaneously in laboratory populations. These tadpoles cease development at an early hindlimb stage, but continue to grow and develop into grossly deformed giants. Giant tadpoles lack thyroid glands, and differ in morphology and behaviour from normal larvae. They are negatively buoyant, typic...
In searches for planetary transits in the field, well over half of the survey stars are typically giants or other stars that are too large to permit straightforward detection of planets. For all-sky searches of bright Vd11 stars, the fraction is 90%. We show that the great majority of these contaminants can be removed from the sample by analyzing their reduced proper motions (RPMs); giants have...
We report on detailed abundances of giants in the Galactic bulge, measured with the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the 10-m Keck telescope. We also review other work on the bulge field population and globular clusters using Keck/HIRES. Our new spectra have 3 times the resolution and higher S/N than previous spectra obtained with 4m telescopes. We are able to derive log g from Fe II lines and exc...
We study the evolution of stellar activity in a volumelimited sample of single giants within 35 pc distance from the Sun as measured by the amount of soft X-ray emission. This sample of 36 stars is assumed to be complete for absolute magnitude MV <∼ 3.0 and for X-ray luminosities Lx >∼ 1.5 × 1028 erg s−1. We use ROSAT data to determine stellar activity, Hipparcos parallaxes to place stars into ...
This paper investigates both aggregate and distributional impacts of the trade integration of China, India, and Central and Eastern Europe in a quantitative multi-country multi-sector model, comparing outcomes with and without factor market frictions. Under perfect withincountry factor mobility, the gains to the rest of the world from trade integration of emerging giants are 0.37%, ranging from...
Context. So far, red giant oscillations have been studied from radial velocity and/or light curve variations, which reveal frequencies of the oscillation modes. To characterise radial and non-radial oscillations, line profile variations are a valuable diagnostic. Here we present for the first time a line profile analysis of pulsating red giants, taking into account the small line profile variat...
The red giant branch (RGB) of globular clusters (GCs) is home to some exotic stars, which may provide clues on the formation multiple stellar populations in GCs. It well known that binary interactions are responsible for many stars. Thus, it important understand what fraction stars RGB GCs result interactions. In this paper, we performed a population synthesis study track number post-binary-int...
We present relation of the mean I-band brightness of red clump stars on metallicity. Red clump stars were proposed to be a very attractive standard candle for distance determination. The calibration is based on 284 nearby red giant stars whose high-quality spectra made it possible to determine accurate individual metal abundances. High-quality parallaxes (sigmapi&solm0;pi<10%) and photometry of...

We present V , B − V, and DDO C(41 − 42) and C(42 − 45) photometry for a sample of 75 red giants down to MV = +2 in the relatively metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M71. The C(41− 42) colors reveal a bimodal distribution of CN band strengths generally anticorrelated with CH band strength as measured by the C(42 − 45) color. Both DDO colors agree well with those found in 47 Tucanae – a nearby...
