A comparative study of vortex phase diagrams in two weakly pinned low Tc superconductors, Ca3Rh4Sn13 (CaRhSn) and Yb3Rh4Sn13 (YbRhSn), is presented. In CaRhSn, we can witness a disorder-driven transition via the phenomenon of second magnetization peak whose field-temperature dependence is analogous to that often discussed in the context of a Bragg glass (BG) to vortex glass (VG) transition.

The order of the vortex state in La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 is probed using muon-spin rotation and small-angle neutron scattering. A transition from a Bragg glass to a vortex glass is observed, where the latter is composed of disordered vortex lines. In the vicinity of the transition the microscopic behavior reflects a delicate interplay of thermally induced and pinning-induced disorder.

We study the role of correlations in the energy landscape of heteropolymers and proteins, specifically their role in the glass transition in random heteropolymers and the folding transition in minimally frustrated proteins. In the context of the glass transition, a correlated landscape results in a more gradual freezing into basins of extensive entropy, while not completely destroying the first...

– We introduce a finite-connectivity ferromagnetic model with a three-spin interaction which has a crystalline (ferromagnetic) phase as well as a glass phase. The model is not frustrated, it has a ferromagnetic equilibrium phase at low temperature which is not reached dynamically in a quench from the high-temperature phase. Instead it shows a glass transition which can be studied in detail by a...

PURPOSE Glass transition temperature is a main indicator for amorphous polymers and biological macromolecules as materials, and would be a key for understanding the role of trehalose in protecting proteins and cells against desiccation. In this study, we measured the glass transition temperature by differential scanning calorimetry of dried lens tissues as a model of a whole biological tissue t...

A low temperature Monte Carlo dynamics of a Keating-like oscillator model is used to study the relationship between the nature of network glasses from the viewpoint of rigidity, the thermal reversibility during the glass transition and the strong-fragile behaviour of glass-forming liquids. The model shows that a Phillips optimal glass formation with minimal enthalpic changes is obtained under a...

The glass transition is described in terms of thermally activated local structural rearrangements, the secondary relaxations of the glass phase. The interaction between these secondary relaxations leads to a much faster and much more dramatic breakdown of the shear modulus than without interaction, thus creating the impression of a separate primary process which in reality does not exist. The m...

Many liquids have heat capacities that substantially exceed those of the corresponding crystal, and this discrepancy magnifies in the supercooled regime. Thus, liquid entropy declines more rapidly with temperature than does crystal entropy, and the former paradoxically seems to fall below the latter for temperatures below the Kauzmann point TK • Although laboratory glass transitions inevitably ...

We propose a simple dynamical model of the glass transition based on the results from a non-randomly frustrated spin model which is known to form a glassy state below a characteristic quench temperature. The model is characterized by a multi-valleyed free-energy surface which is modulated by an overall curvature. The transition associated with the vanishing of this overall curvature is reminisc...

In an eeort to understand the glass transition, the kinetics of a spin model with frustration but no quenched randomness has been analyzed. The phenomenology of the spin model is remarkably similar to that of structural glasses. Analysis of the model suggests that defects play a major role in dictating the the dynamics as the glass transition is approached.
