The influence of MOCVD growth conditions (carrier gas, growth temperature, and V/III ratio) on the AlGaN barrier and the corresponding 2DEG for AlGaN/GaN heterostructures grown on 150 mm silicon is investigated. Hall mobility 2200 cm 2 /V.s, with sheet carrier concentration 8.7e10 12 cm -2 and sheet resistance 326 Ohm/sq, is obtained for AlGaN grown in N2 ambient and with high V/III ratios.

In order to assess the effects of ambient thermal conditions on postnatal head growth in low birth weight infants, 42 asymtomatic neonates were reared under 4 combinations of caloric intake and thermal environment after the first week of life. Exposure to a subthermoneutral temperature (abdominal skin temperature of 35 degrees C), together with a relatively low caloric intake (120 cal/kg per da...

Evolutionary adaptation to variation in resource supply has resulted in plant strategies that are based on trade-offs in functional traits. Here, we investigate, for the first time across multiple species, whether such trade-offs are also apparent in growth and morphology responses to past low, current ambient, and future high CO 2 concentrations. We grew freshly germinated seedlings of up to 2...

Direct monitoring of the formation and growth of nanoparticles by microscopy in real time is of fundamental interest in understanding the chemical and self assembly processes involved. Such studies are difficult to implement in solution, but have been carried out on solid substrates, mostly under specialized conditions, including ultra high vacuum. The present study illustrates the facility wit...

Long, straight mesoscale silver wires have been fabricated from AgNO3 electrolyte via electrodeposition without the help of templates, additives, and surfactants. Although the wire growth speed is very fast due to growth under non-equilibrium conditions, the wire morphology is regular and uniform in diameter. Structural studies reveal that the wires are single-crystalline, with the [112] direct...

Four-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies L. (Karst.)) seedlings were exposed to ambient and elevated (1.5 x ambient in 1997 and 1.6 x ambient in 1998) ozone concentrations [O3] and three nitrogen (N) and two phosphorus (P) availabilities: "optimal" values (control); 70% of the control N and P values (LN and LP); and 150% of the control N value (HN). Treatments were applied in an open-field ozon...

Background: Adverse pregnancy outcomes (low birth weight, prematurity and intrauterine growth retardation) are associated with exposure to urban air pollution. Experimental data have also shown that such exposure elicits adverse reproductive outcomes. We examined association between spontaneous abortion of the first trimester of pregnancy and ambient concentrations of Ozone, Nirogen Dioxide and...

Coastal ecosystems are subjected to global and local environmental stressors, including increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) (and subsequent ocean acidification) and nutrient loading. Here, we tested how two common macroalgal species in the Northwest Atlantic (Ulva spp. and Fucus vesiculosus Linneaus) respond to the combination of increased CO2 and nutrient loading. We utilized two levels...

Muscle growth was studied in larvae of sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L., reared at two temperatures: real ambient temperature ( congruent with 15 degrees C during vitelline phase and increased gradually) and 19 degrees C from fertilization until the end of larval development. Muscle cellularity, body length and body weight were measured. Early temperature influenced larval development and so, ...
