Bisphosphorylpillar[5]arenes ( and ) were synthesized and used to study the host-guest complexation in organic solvents and water. The interactions between the guests and the phosphate of the hosts lead to strong binding towards alkyl dihalides and alkyldiammonium ions. may be used to detect or separate alkyl dihalides in water due to the rapid precipitation of the complex.

A polymer containing viologen radical cation monomer units is shown to reversibly switch between paramagnetic and diamagnetic states via non-covalent host-guest interactions or temperature control in water. Cycling between diamagnetic and paramagnetic forms is accompanied by changes in optical and magnetic properties.

A new dinuclear Pd(II) metallocycle consisting of a 4,4'-bipyridin-1-ium ligand with a quinoline moiety was self-assembled in aqueous solution with the aid of template molecules; the situation found in solution in which both syn and anti or only the anti atropoisomers are observed strongly relies on the intermolecular host-guest interactions.

A thioxanthone derivative containing a covalently attached N-labeled nitroxide was incarcerated into an octaacid nanocapsule. Photoexcitation of the thioxanthone chromophore generated electron spin polarization of the nitroxide. This spin polarization of the N-labelednitroxidewas transferred through thewalls of the carcerand to a N-labeled nitroxide in external bulk solvent, a process that was ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potentially useful materials for hydrogen and methane storage. However, the weak interactions between the MOF host and gas guest molecules have limited their storage capacities at elevated temperatures. In this issue, Alkordi et al. [IUCrJ (2017), 4, 131-135] illustrate an example of a porous MOF with a suitable pore size and unique pore surface for enhanced ...

Aqueous supramolecular chemistry and highly controlled self-assembly of multi-component architectures are novel tools for investigating and answering questions with different biological implications. Among other self-assembly motifs the barrel-shaped host molecule cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) is of particular interest due to its capability of incorporating two guest molecules simultaneously in its h...

Zeolite nanoparticles with various organosilanized surfaces have been synthesized in situ by a one-step approach which provides not only a functionalized surface for diverse host-guest interactions but also an attractive path for preparation of monodispersed template-free zeolite nanoparticles.

Experiments were carried out to synthesize and characterize a structure H clathrate hydrate containing CO(2) and 3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone (pinacolone) by means of phase equilibrium and powder X-ray diffraction measurements. Molecular dynamics simulations of this structure H hydrate were performed to understand the nature of guest-host molecular interactions.

The X-ray crystal structure of 1,12-dodecane diammonium (C(12)DA(2+)) encapsulated in cucurbit[8]uril reveals an unconventional U-shaped conformation of C(12)DA(2+), which is attributed to the favorable host-guest interactions to overcome the charge-charge repulsion of the two ammonium groups in close proximity and high internal strain.

A new tripodal ligand has been designed by connecting pyridine-based coordination units to a rigid triptycene moiety. Its reaction with europium(III) provides three-dimensional tetranuclear edifices, whose structural and photophysical characteristics as well as host-guest interactions are discussed in this contribution.
