background: during the recent years, significant progress has been achieved on development of novel anti-viral drugs. natural products are assumed as the potential sources of novel anti-viral drugs; therefore, there are some previous studies reporting the anti-viral compounds from venomous animals. based on the significant value for tracing of non-toxic anti-viral agents from natural resources,...

Severe hepatitis due to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in immunocompetent patients is a very rare event. The acute hepatitis may lead to fulminant deterioration of liver function and can be rapidly fatal. The diagnosis should be considered in case of severe hepatitis of unknown cause. Early consideration of HSV-1 hepatitis in the differential diagnosis in an adult patient, also with an app...

The methylation pattern of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) DNA, present in the central nervous system of latently infected mice, was examined by digestion of the DNA with methylation-sensitive restriction endonucleases and Southern blot hybridization. Using the enzymes SmaI, XmaI, SalI and SacII, the data indicate no extensive methylation of latent HSV-1 DNA in vivo. Thus, extensive methyla...

In terms of molecular symmetry and bioactivity, new C3- and CS-symmetrical derivatives based on the tris(2-aminoethyl)amine scaffold were designed and synthesized. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for antiviral activity with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) by a plaque reduction assay and for cytotoxic activity with Vero cells. Most of the compounds showed no significant anti-HSV-1 a...

Besides overcoming physical constraints, such as extreme temperatures, reduced humidity, elevated pressure, and natural predators, human pathogens further need to overcome an arsenal of antimicrobial components evolved by the host to limit infection, replication and optimally, reinfection. Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) infect humans at a high frequency and pe...

The essential components of the immune system that control primary and chronic infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in mice were investigated. Infection within the first few days can be controlled by alpha/beta interferon (IFN-alpha/beta) alone without significant contribution of B, T, or NK cells. IFN-alpha/beta and IFN-gamma cooperate in the elimination of virus in the absence o...

BACKGROUND Neonatal herpes is a condition with high morbidity and mortality. The greatest risk occurs when the mother acquires herpes simplex virus (HSV) towards the end of pregnancy. A study from Seattle has suggested that the risk of acquisition of HSV during pregnancy was 3.7%. In Australia, HSV-2 infection is less common in pregnant women than in the United States. Consequently we conducted...

Abstract Purpose Herpes simplex diffuse endotheliitis with accompanying feathery infiltration is difficult to diagnose due corneal findings that are similar fungal keratitis. This case series reports on the effectiveness of using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) herpes in appearance Methods After extracting smear sample DNA, samples were then applied two independent PCR assays, a quali...

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are neurotropic viruses and common human pathogens causing a major public health problem such as genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease also correlated to increased transmission and replication of the human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1). Therefore, compounds capable of blocking HIV-1, HSV-1 and HSV-2 transmission represent c...

We report a case of a 62-year-old female with seizures and encephalitis. Molecular testing of the patient's cerebrospinal fluid was positive for both herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of simultaneous detection of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in cerebrospinal fluid.
