The augmented histamine test was performed in 150 cases of oesophageal hiatal hernia with and without duodenal ulcers and the results have been analysed. There was no significant difference in the result compared with normals. In addition there is no correlation between the acid secretion and either symptoms or size of the hernia. The pathogenesis of heartburn is briefly discussed.
Hiatal Hernia is rarely seen in a neonate. The mode of presentation in the neonatal period can be confused with the possibility of a congenital diaphragmatic hernia and other chest pathologies. The upper gastrointestinal tract contrast study is diagnostic in this disease, but careful viewing of the plain X-ray of the chest can also suggest the diagnosis.
doi:10.3121/cmr.2016.1332 A man, age 81 years, presented with frequent nausea and non-bloody vomiting for the past week, and a 3-day history of worsening epigastric abdominal pain with no flatus or bowel movements. He was tachycardic (120 bpm) and hypotensive (86/40 mm Hg). Upper abdomen was profoundly tender and distended. Laboratory results were significant for leukocytosis (20 x 103/uL; norm...
Seventy-six cases of strangulated diaphragmatic hernia were reported up to 1953. An additional 64 cases reported between 1953 and 1966 are reviewed in this paper. The incidence of strangulation in various types of congenital/traumatic, hiatal, and incisional herniae is discussed. Four further cases of strangulated diaphragmatic hernia are presented. The mechanism of strangulation, its diagnosis...
Diagnosis of a hiatal hernia (HH) is typically made using an upper gastro-intestinal barium X-ray. A complementary test is gastroscopy or upper-intestinal endoscopy. There are reports in which HH has been diagnosed by echocardiography. We here describe a case of a HH visible on an echocardiogram in a female with palpitations.
Paraesophageal hernias account for about 5 to 10% of all hiatal hernias. The surgical approach to these hernias has radically changed over the last 15 years, as mostly patients who are symptomatic are operated on nowadays, and preferably by a laparoscopic approach rather than by laparotomy or thoracotomy. We reviewed the surgical repair of paraesophageal hernias, focusing particularly on the op...
Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) are strongly associated with erosive esophagitis (EE). The prevalence of MS and EE, and the distribution of adipose tissue have been known to differ markedly between men and women. Although the prevalence of EE in men with MS is known to be higher in visceral fat type MS (V-type MS) than in subcutaneous fat type MS (S-type MS), the association between EE and ...
AIM We assessed pubovisceral muscle (PVM) defects, levator hiatal dimensions and anal sphincter defects using three-dimensional (3D) endovaginal and anorectal ultrasonography in women with previous vaginal delivery and faecal incontinence to determine the relationship between anatomic/functional findings and severity of faecal incontinence symptoms. METHOD This was a prospective, observationa...
BACKGROUND/AIMS Primary repair of a large hiatal hernia is associated with a published recurrence rate of up to 10%; anecdotal rates even higher than this have been reported to the authors. The use of prosthetic material in the repair of other abdominal wall defects has often produced better results than primary repair. We wanted to compare laparoscopic primary repair of large hiatus hernias wi...
