The fundamental molecular ion H3 + has impacted astronomy, chemistry, and physics, particularly since the discovery of its rovibrational spectrum. Consisting of three identical fermions, its properties are profoundly influenced by the requirements of exchange symmetry, most notably the nonexistence of its ground rotational state. Spectroscopy of H3 + is often used to infer the relative abundanc...

We study the dynamics of coupled dipolar oscillations in a Fermi-Bose mixture of 40 K and 87 Rb atoms. This low-energy collective mode is strongly affected by the interspecies interactions. Measurements are performed in the dynamical and quantum degenerate regimes and evidence the crucial role of the statistical properties of the mixture. At the onset of quantum degeneracy, we investigate the r...

Excited baryons may be analyzed in the 1/Nc expansion as true resonances in scattering amplitudes. The key idea making this program possible is a generalization of methods originally applied to chiral soliton models in the 1980’s. One finds model-independent relations among amplitudes that impose mass and width degeneracies among resonances of various quantum numbers. Phenomenological evidence ...

Radial blow-up, including inhomogeneous versions, of boundary faces of a manifold (always with corners) is an important tool for resolving singularities, degeneracies and competing notions of homogeneity. These constructions are shown to be particular cases of generalized boundary blow-up in which a new manifold and blow-down map are constructed from, and conversely determine, combinatorial dat...

We present a sufficient condition for approximate controllability of the bilinear discretespectrum Schrödinger equation exploiting the use of several controls. The controllability result extends to simultaneous controllability, approximate controllability in Hs, and tracking in modulus. The result is more general than those present in the literature even in the case of one control and permits t...

We consider the physics potential of CERN based neutrino oscillation experiments consisting of a Beta Beam (βB) and a Super Beam (SPL) sending neutrinos to MEM-PHYS, a 440 kt wateř Cerenkov detector at Fréjus, at a distance of 130 km from CERN. The θ 13 discovery reach and the sensitivity to CP violation are investigated, including a detailed discussion of parameter degeneracies and systematica...

We present constraints on several cosmological parameters from a combined analysis of the most recent Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy data and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey cluster mass function. We find that the combination of the two data sets breaks several degeneracies among the parameters and provides the following constraints: σ 8 = 0.76 ± 0.09, Ω m = 0.26

We prove that any pair of bivariate trinomials has at most 5 isolated roots in the positive quadrant. The best previous upper bounds independent of the polynomial degrees were much larger, e.g., 248832 (for just the non-degenerate roots) via a famous general result of Khovanski. Our bound is sharp, allows real exponents, allows degeneracies, and extends to certain systems of n-variate fewnomial...

Type Ia supernova data have recently become strong enough to enable, for the first time, constraints on the time variation of the dark energy density and its equation of state. Most analyses, however, are using simple two or three-parameter descriptions of the dark energy evolution, since it is well known that allowing more degrees of freedom introduces serious degeneracies. Here we present a m...

Counterfactual learning is a natural scenario to improve web-based machine translation services by offline learning from feedback logged during user interactions. In order to avoid the risk of showing inferior translations to users, in such scenarios mostly exploration-free deterministic logging policies are in place. We analyze possible degeneracies of inverse and reweighted propensity scoring...
