Background and Objective: Thyroid nodules are among the most common clinical problems and the application of an inexpensive and accurate diagnostic method prevents performing inessential surgeries. In this regard, the aim of this study was to compare the cytologic report of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of thyroid nodules with the results of thyroid surgery. Materials and Methods: In this cross...

Isolated involvement of the thyroid by tuberculosis is very rare as reported in literature. We are presenting a case of isolated tuberculous thyroiditis presented as a solitary thyroid nodule. The patient was treated with anti-tuberculous regimen and he responded well with disappearance of the nodule and normalization of the thyroid scan.
To the Editors, A 67yearold woman presented with a solitary nodule in the left lobe of the thyroid gland. She was clinically and chemically euthyroid. Thyroid function test showed serum free thyroxine 1.01 ng/dl (normal 0.83–1.44 ng/dl), free triiodothyronine 1.91 pg/ml (normal 1.733.20 pg/m) and thyrotropin 1.25 mIU/L (normal 0.494.67 mIU/L). An ultrasound examination of thyroid gland show...
INTRODUCTION Scintigraphy with technetium-sestamibi (MIBI) is the test of choice for localising adenomas in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). In some studies it has emerged that the increase in sensitivity of this test could be associated with a decrease in the uptake of the radiotracer by the thyroid gland. The aim of this study is to analyse our experience in patients with a n...

Background: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is usually used to distinguish the malignant and benign nodules. Applying a biopsy needle evokes a sense of fear and pain in the patients. Although some studies refute the usefulness of local anesthesia (LA) prior to fine needle aspiration biopsy, it is still debatable. This prospective cross-sectional study intended to evaluate the effect of LA ...
OBJECTIVE After the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP), the incidence of thyroid cancer increased among children. Recently, a strong relationship between solid thyroid nodules and the incidence of thyroid cancer was shown in atomic bomb survivors. To assess the prognosis of benign thyroid nodules in individuals living in the Zhitomir region of Ukraine, around the CNPP, we cond...
A 29-year-old woman presenting with an ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome and a nodule of the upper lobe of the left lung was explored by indium 111 (111In) octreotide scintigraphy. This showed a pathologic uptake by the nodule. Treatment with octreotide resulted in the rapid control of hypercortisolism prior to surgery.
The patient is a 55-year-old female with a history of multinodular goiter. She was followed for several years for a dominant left-sided superior pole thyroid nodule. Several prior fine needle aspiration biopsies had been performed. All were consistent with the diagnosis of degenerative colloid nodule. Eventually she developed symptoms of intermittent choking and shortness of breath and presente...
