This paper reviews the current evidence available on the practice of spinal immobilisation in the prehospital environment. Following this, initial conclusions from a consensus meeting held by the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in March 2012 are presented.

BACKGROUND Of all distal radius fractures, 25 % are complete articular fractures (AO/OTA type C fractures). Two thirds of those fractures are displaced and require reduction. According to several International Guidelines, adequately reduced intra-articular distal radius fractures are best treated non-operatively with plaster immobilisation, while surgical fixation is suggested only when the art...

OBJECTIVES To determine the likely enrolment rate of eligible participants into a randomised controlled trial (RCT) in which a within-cast intermittent pneumatic compression device using Jet Impulse Technology (IPC/JIT) is 1 of 3 possible interventions in a RCT for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the clinical setting of isolated lower limb cast immobilisation. DESIGN A prosp...

Contractile proteins exist as a number of isoforms that show a developmental and tissue-specific pattern of expression. Using gene-specific cDNA probes, the expression of the sarcomeric myosin heavy chain (MHC) multi-gene family and of cardiac (foetal) alpha-actin was analysed in three different rat hindlimb muscles immobilised for 5 days in either the shortened or lengthened positions. For eac...

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the ability and safety of driving with commonly used upper limb casts, and to determine the effect of hand dominance. Material and Methods: Two healthy drivers, one of them right-handed and the other left-handed (confirmed with the Edinburgh handedness inventory), were selected. The vehicles used in this study were the 2006 model Volkswagen...

We describe two patients with a diffuse haemangioma of the lower limb complicated by pathological fracture of the femoral shaft, one of whom was treated by a bone graft and immobilisation in a cast, and the other by external fixation and injection of bone marrow. A review of the literature identified difficulty in control of bleeding and obtaining bony union.

Surface bound silicatein retains its biocatalytic activity, which was demonstrated by monitoring the immobilisation of silicatein using a histidine-tag chelating anchor and the subsequent biosilicification of SiO(2) on surfaces by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

We treated a selected group of patients with superior-half bullous retinal detachments by preoperative bed rest and immobilisation of the affected eye using a temporary inferior rectus suture taped to the brow. Sufficient flattening of the retina was achieved in each case to permit successful simple extrascleral detachment surgery.

In a family of nine members, two had systemic lupus erythematosus and seven positive serological test results for syphilis. None of the affected subjects had a history or physical signs of syphilis, but two had positive results to the Treponema pallidum immobilisation test. The explanation for these findings is not known, but possibily they were all false-positive reactions.

The clinical and light and electron microscopic findings are reported in a 14-year-old patient who died 12 months after mitral valve replacement with a Hancock prosthesis. Severe cusp calcification had led to immobilisation of the valve and stenosis. Calcification involved the substance of the valve cusps. The cause of the calcification in this patient is unknown.
