We present an experimental and theoretical study of a simple, passive system consisting of a birefringent, two-dimensional photonic crystal and a polarizer in series, and show that superluminal dispersive effects can arise even though no incident radiation is absorbed or reflected. We demonstrate that a vector formulation of the Kramers-Kronig dispersion relations facilitates an understanding o...

We study the performance of achromatic half-wave plates (AHWP) as a function of their construction parameters, the detection bandwidth of a power detector operating in the millimeter wave band, and the spectral shape of the incident radiation. We focus particular attention on the extraction of the degree of incident polarization and its orientation angle from the intensity measured as a functio...

A theoretical model is presented that simulates the thermal effects of laser radiation incident on biological tissue. The multiple scattering and absorption of the laser beam and the thermal diffusion process in the tissue are evaluated by a numerical technique that is well suited for microcomputers. Results are compared with recent empirical observations.

The design and manufacture of a multiple-reflection-type multilayer element is described that efficiently removes all wavelengths higher than 550 nm from the incident radiation and that at the same time acts as a polarizer in the 275-550-nm spectral transmission region.

A novel source of continuous-wave terahertz radiation based on difference frequency generation (DFG) in GaAs crystal is proposed. Phase matching is provided using integration of appropriate optical and terahertz waveguides based on dispersive properties of GaAs. The output frequency can be tuned between 0-3.5 THz by tuning the incident wavelengths in the range of 1.5-1.6 microm.

Data analysis is the application of probability and statistics to draw inference from observation. Is a signal present or absent? Is the source an inspiraling binary system or a supernova? At what point in the sky is the radiation incident from? In these notes I want to address how two different statistical methodologies — Bayesian and Frequentist — approach the problem of statistical inference.

Considered as a gedanken experiment are the conditions under which the relativistic Doppler shifting of visible electromagnetic radiation to beyond the human ocular range could reduce the incident radiance of the source, and render a luminous astrophysical body (LAB) invisible to a naked eye. This paper determines the proper distance as a function of relativistic velocity at which a luminous ob...

It is proved that one can choose a control function on an arbitrarilly small open subset of the boundary of an obstacle so that the total radiation from this obstacle for a fixed direction of the incident plane wave and for a fixed wave number will be as small as one wishes. The obstacle is called “invisible” in this case.

We demonstrate that one-dimensional photonic crystal structures (such as multilayer films) can exhibit complete reflection of radiation in a given frequency range for all incident angles and polarizations. We derive a general criterion for this behavior that does not require materials with very large indices. We perform numerical studies that illustrate this effect.

The successful fabrication and experimental verification of a novel metamaterial based on flexible metallic helices is reported. The helices undergo compression under the influence of incident radiation, demonstrating a nonlinear chiral electromagnetic response, associated with the power-dependent change in the helix pitch. This design is promising for application to power-dependent polarizatio...
