The purpose of this study was to investigate asymmetries in detection of horizontal motion in normal infants and children and in patients with infantile esotropia. Motion detection thresholds (% motion signal) were measured in 75 normal infants and in 36 eyes of 27 infants with infantile esotropia (ET), using a forced-choice preferential looking paradigm with random-dot patterns. Absolute motio...
Infantile hemangiomas are the most common vascular tumors in childhood. In view of its proven effectiveness in such cases, propranolol is the drug of choice. We present the case of a male infant who started treatment with propranolol shortly after birth due to heart disease. After 7 months, when the patient had suffered various respiratory exacerbations, this treatment was suspended. One week l...
PURPOSE To compare early radiologic findings in three clinically similar progressive encephalopathies of childhood. METHODS Brain CT and/or MR studies were done in 57 children 3 to 36 months of age: 16 with infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, 5 with Rett syndrome, 6 with Krabbe disease, and 30 control subjects with normal neurologic status. In addition, previous descriptions in the lite...
BACKGROUND Alexander disease (AD) is a sporadic leukodystrophy that predominantly affects infants and children and usually results in death within ten years after onset. The infantile form comprises the most of affected individuals. It presents in the first two years of life, typically with progressive psychomotor retardation with loss of developmental milestones, megalencephaly and frontal bos...

Infant vaginal bleeding is an alarming symptom in an infant. Although several causes can be listed, the possibility of malignancy still needs to be ruled out in view of the guarded prognosis of these uncommon infantile tumors. This case report aims to raise the awareness towards the workup and management of infantile malignancies in a baby girl.
Desmoplastic infantile astrocytoma is a rare low-grade malignant brain tumor found in infants. Its pathological diagnosis can be made on the basis of its histological characteristics and immunohistochemical staining. A case of desmoplastic infantile astrocytoma, including its clinical manifestations, pathological characteristics, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, is reported. Pr...
Infantile fibrosarcoma is very rare tumor and seldom occurs in oral cavity. Overall good prognosis is reported in more than 80% cases. We present a 5-month old female patient with swelling of the tongue for four months. This was excised completely. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry revealed it as infantile fibrosarcoma of grade II.
Krabbe disease (KD) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by dysfunctional galactosylceramidase activity. Infantile form is the most common subtype, occurring at about 6-month of age. We present a rare case of infantile KD with magnetic resonance imaging showing white matter, thalamic and basal ganglia lesions rarely associated with an enlargement of the optic nerves bilat...
