To enable an online virtual university, a learning environment covering the entire spectrum of the learning and management process is required. However, constructing such an environment remains a hard work. One of the problems is to integrate heterogeneous software modules from different providers. In addition, these modules must constantly evolve. In this paper, we propose CUBES, an e-learning...
Biological databases face challenges in four main areas: (1). integration, interoperation and federation; (2). ontologies and definitions of semantics; (3). community annotation; and (4). integration of data analysis tools with databases. Each of these areas provides interesting targets for research and development.
Dynamic HMI generation based on declarative descriptions solves the problem of dynamically integrating services into the HMI that are not known at design/deploy time of the HMI. [Hi07] describes this approach for individual services. In this paper, we show how we have extended this approach to enable HMI generation for compositions of services and their semantic interoperation.
We present security extensions to the RTI prototype developed at ONERA (Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales). These extensions are aimed at guaranteeing secure interoperation of simulations belonging to various mutually suspicious organizations. The paper describes the design of a security architecture for HLA/RTI and its implementation. 1 This study was funded by DGA/STTC.
A key aspect of any data integration endeavor is determining the relationships between the source schemata and the target schema. This schema integration task must be tackled regardless of the integration architecture or mapping formalism. In this paper, we provide a task model for schema integration. We use this breakdown to motivate a workbench for schema integration in which multiple tools s...
"No Man is an island Entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent…." 1 Introduction One of the challenges for knowledge-based systems is interoperation with other software, intelligent or not. In recent years, our research group has participated in various integration efforts, where interoperation was supported through translation techniques, mostly at the syntactic level and more re...
This paper highlights the need to supplement the work within the IPv6 community on IPv6 management with mechanisms specifically to support IPv6 transitioning. As a major feature of any IPv6 network for the considerable future, management support for the deployment and operation of a transitioning infrastructure is vital. We will propose a format for transitioning management information and exam...
Coalition network-centric operations are a crucial component of future military operations but their success and efficiency is by no means guaranteed and simulation is one powerful technique for assuring this success. The challenges of coalition operations that simulation can address spring from a number of sources, including differences in equipment, differences in training, and differences in...
In the BiodiversityWorld project we are building a GRID to support scientific biodiversity-related research. The requirements associated with such a GRID are somewhat different from other GRIDs, and this has influenced the architecture that we have developed. In this paper we outline these requirements, most notably the need to interoperate over a diverse set of legacy databases and application...
