In this paper we present and discuss spectra obtained by SUMER on SOHO from an active region loop system observed on the solar disc, close to the central meridian, on July 26th, 1996. The region was observed with a spatial resolution of about 2′′ by 2′′ in emission lines forming in the transition region and inner corona, with the aim of investigating the physical structure and dynamical behavio...

This research shows that short-term synaptic plasticity can play a critical role in shaping the behavioral response to environmental change. In Aplysia, exposure to turbulent environments produces a stable reduction in the duration of the siphon-withdrawal reflex (SWR) and the responsiveness of siphon motor neurons. Recovery takes >1 min after a brief (10 sec-5 min) exposure but <1 min after a ...

Benthic marine suspension feeders provide an important link between benthic and pelagic ecosystems. The strength of this link is determined by suspension-feeding rates. Many studies have measured suspension-feeding rates using indirect clearance-rate methods, which are based on the depletion of suspended particles. Direct methods that measure the flow of water itself are less common, but they c...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Several prospective trials have shown that ischemic stroke can be prevented by performing an endarterectomy in patients with high-grade carotid stenosis. Our purpose was to ascertain the frequency of carotid artery tandem lesions and to determine whether their presence alters the surgeon's decision to perform an endarterectomy. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the ce...

We previously showed that the associative enhancement of Aplysia siphon sensorimotor synapses in a cellular analog of classical conditioning is disrupted by infusing the Ca(2+) chelator 1, 2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N-N',N'-tetraacetic acid into the postsynaptic motor neuron before training or by training in the presence of the NMDA receptor antagonist DL-2-amino-5-phosphonovalerate (APV). O...

Observations of Ti I lines at 2.2 µm show that the Evershed flow takes place in cool, almost horizontal channels with a low magnetic field strength (≈ 500–900 G) that does not appear to change significantly across the penumbra. This property might allow an outward directed siphon flow to exist along such cool flux tubes.

Issues related to the design and hydraulic calculations of transit part a closed tubular water supply structure siphon type are considered. The operating conditions with rectangular pipes in transition mode estimated. Due formation jump, inlet section experiences increased hydrodynamic loads, leading certain defects destruction. two breaks along length portal smooth head or without it was model...

Post-tetanic potentiation (PTP) lasting several minutes is produced by high frequency intracellular activation of mechanosensory neurons. Control procedures suggest that the PTP involves a homosynaptic mechanism, restricted to the active synapses. The capacity for PTP appears to be a general property of mechanosensory neurons in this animal since it is found in separate sensory populations inne...
