BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare reliability in handling and function of resterilised and single-use disposable ultrasonic scissors. METHODS In a prospective randomized study, the surgeon blindly tested new and resterilised ultrasonic scissors. The parameters were force of activation, cutting effect, coagulation effect, error messages and disturbing generator noise. RESULTS 5...
BACKGROUND After its introduction, laparoscopic cholecystectomy rapidly expanded around the world and was accepted the procedure of choice by consensus. However, analysis of evidence shows no difference regarding primary outcome measures between laparoscopic and small-incision cholecystectomy. In absence of clear clinical benefit it may be interesting to focus on the resource use associated wit...
The conventional laparoscopic approach to rectal surgery has several limitations, and therefore many colorectal surgeons have great expectations for the robotic surgical system as an alternative modality in overcoming challenges of laparoscopic surgery and thus enhancing oncologic and functional outcomes. This review explores the possibility of robotic surgery as an alternative approach in lapa...
CONTEXT Current methods of assessing candidates for medical specialties that involve laparoscopic skills suffer from a lack of instruments to assess the ability to work in a minimally invasive surgery environment. OBJECTIVES A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether aptitude assessment can be used to predict variability in the acquisition and performance of laparoscopic skills. M...
INTRODUCTION We have performed laparoscopic pyeloplasty (LP) in our department since 2004. Our goal is to describe, step by step, the approach of kidney stones during transperitoneal laparoscopic pyeloplasty and the outcomes after the procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twelve patients with kidney stones treated by transperitoneal laparoscopic pyeloplasty were found. The hospital records with cli...
We successfully performed 6 LESS radical nephrectomy via the retroperitoneal approach (RLESS) using the Alexis wound retractor as a single access with conventional laparoscopic instruments. The results demonstrated that our RLESS technique of radical nephrectomy is a safe and feasible procedure for management of localized renal cancer.
BACKGROUND As laparoscopy becomes a standard approach in many urological procedures, researchers strive to make minimally invasive surgery less invasive. Our objective was to apply recent innovations in equipment and surgical approaches to develop the technique and perform laparo-endoscopic single site radical prostatectomy (LESS-RP). METHODS The technique for LESS-RP was derived by combining...
The rare complication of port-site tuberculosis following laparoscopic cholecystectomy is reported. In this case, the source of infection was most probably the laparoscope or its accessories. Thus, proper sterilization of the laparoscope and instruments is of utmost importance in preventing infectious complications and ideally autoclaving should be used for this purpose.
We conducted a retrospective analysis of 29 consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy to compare outcomes using the endostapler (15 women) versus harmonic scissors (14). Both instruments resulted in similar outcomes with regard to operating room time, blood loss, and hospital stay. The harmonic scissors have the advantage of decreasing patient cost compared with th...
During the last two decades laparoscopic surgery has become the standard care for the management of various emergent and elective surgical pathologies. Well-known advantages of laparoscopy include faster recovery, less postoperative pain, lower perioperative complications, and improved cosmesis. Recent development of laparoscopy was represented with introduction of the concept of scarless surge...
