BACKGROUND AND AIM Transjugular liver biopsy is accepted procedure in patients in whom percutaneous liver biopsy is contraindicated. We report our experience with this procedure, its indications, efficacy and safety in Indian population over 5 years. MATERIAL & METHODS A retrospective study of 145 consecutive patients who had undergone transjugular liver biopsy from May 2002 to Nov. 2007 was ...

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) is responsible for the majority of cases of viral hepatitis in transfusion dependent thalassemic patients. Although recent screening policies have markedly decreased the incidence of HCV infection, this problem is still one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidity in thalassemic patients. This retrospective study was designed to investigate the fr...
BACKGROUND & AIMS With the increasing prevalence of liver disease worldwide, there is an urgent clinical need for reliable methods to diagnose and stage liver pathology. Liver biopsy, the current gold standard, is invasive and limited by sampling and observer dependent variability. In this study, we aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of a novel magnetic resonance protocol for liver tissue ...
ito cell (fat storing cell=fsc) is one of the cells which forms the liver sinusoidal wall it also forms the connective tissue of the liver. the cell was first identified in 1963 by a scientist named ito. it will get damaged due to the plasma fat increase which is resulted from a diet of corn oil 10% and fish oil 10% the damage wil be in form of fat storing cell. the fsc morphology may represent...
Characteristics for an optimal liver biopsy specimen were recently defined as 20 to 25 mm long and/or containing more than 11 complete portal tracts (CPTs). A systematic review of percutaneous liver biopsy (PLB) and transjugular liver biopsy (TJLB) series yielded only 32 PLB studies in which these characteristics were evaluated: mean +/- SD length, 17.7 +/- 5.8 mm and number of CPTs, 7.5 +/- 3....
BACKGROUND Liver fibrosis is characterized by a buildup of connective tissue due to chronic liver damage. Steatosis is the collection of excessive amounts of fat inside liver cells. Liver biopsy remains the gold standard for the diagnosis of liver fibrosis and steatosis, but its use as a diagnostic tool is limited by its invasive nature and high cost. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the cost-effective...
BACKGROUND Diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be established with near certainty by correlating radiological imaging with clinical presentation. However, in the absence of diagnostic certainty, biopsy of liver tissue is mandatory for optimal management. We present our management of a patient with advanced liver disease who presented with an IVC mass extending into the right atrium,...
Arterio-portal fistula may develop at the biopsy site after percutaneous liver biopsy and demonstrates a characteristic appearance on angiography and Lipiodol computed tomography scan of the liver performed shortly after the biopsy. Radiologists should be familiar with these findings in order to avoid misinterpretation of arterio-portal fistula as hepatoma in hepatitis B carriers.
