We report detections of J=2–1 line emission from the carbon monoxide isotopomers 13CO, C18O and C17O in the molecular clouds N159W, N113, N44BC, and N214DE in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). 13CO and C18O lines were observed in two additional clouds: N159S in the LMC and N27 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). While 13CO was detected in both of them, only upper limits to the C18O line emissi...

We selected cepheids from the OGLE database for the Magellanic Clouds in the period range 10 ≤ P ≤ 10 days. There were 33 objects in the LMC and 35 in the SMC. We find that the median amplitude of cepheids in the LMC is 18% larger than in the SMC, a 4 σ effect. This implies that the period flux amplitude relation is not universal, and cannot be used to measure distances accurately. Subject head...

A general review is given of the calibration of the Cepheid distance scale, with particular reference to its use in the determination of H0. Emphasis is placed on the advantage of using a galactic calibration of the Cepheid scale, rather than relying on an adopted distance to the LMC. It is then possible to use LMC data to test for possible metallicity effects on this scale.

The discovery of the Sgr dwarf galaxy shows that the Galactic halo contains large clumps which are not full viralized. This may change implications of observed microlensing events towards the LMC. If more than one such systems are hidden in the Galactic halo, then given their enormous angular size, there is a significant chance for any line of sight, say the LMC direction, to intersect one of t...

Engrailed-1 (En1) is expressed in the ventral ectoderm of the developing limb where it plays an instructive role in the dorsal-ventral patterning of the forelimb. Besides its well-described role as a transcription factor in regulating gene expression through its DNA-binding domain, En1 may also be secreted to form an extracellular gradient, and directly impact on the formation of the retinotect...

Nova LMC 1995 was detected with ROSAT as an X-ray source in repeated observations between 1995 and 1998, starting five months after the outburst. In February 1998, 3 years after the nova outburst, ROSAT PSPC data show that this is the only LMC post-nova – and one out of three among '100 altogether – that appeared as a bright supersoft X-ray source after the outburst. The PSPC data are satisfact...

This paper presents a Fitts' law-based analysis of the user's performance in selection tasks with the Leap Motion Controller compared with a standard mouse device. The Leap Motion Controller (LMC) is a new contact-free input system for gesture-based human-computer interaction with declared sub-millimeter accuracy. Up to this point, there has hardly been any systematic evaluation of this new sys...

It has recently been shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) a substantial effect on Milky Way's stellar halo and streams. Here, we explore how deformations of Way LMC's dark matter haloes affect streams, whether these effects are observable. In particular, focus Orphan-Chenab (OC) stream which passes particularly close to LMC, spans large portion halo. We represent Way--LMC system using ba...

We report on our search for microlensing toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Analysis of 5.7 yr of photometry on 11.9 million stars in the LMC reveals 13È17 microlensing events. A detailed treatment of our detection efficiency shows that this is signiÐcantly more than the D2È4 events expected from lensing by known stellar populations. The timescales of the events range from 34 to 230 days....
