Highly predictive sentential contexts can facilitate the generation of expectancies for low-level physical form-based properties of upcoming linguistic input. When contextual information (such as words in a sentence) constrains upcoming input to a specific syntactic category, words with category-typical physical form-based properties are processed more quickly than category atypical words. We a...

With an aim to high-level understanding of the mathematical contents in a document image the requirement of math-zone extraction and recognition technique is obvious. In this paper we present fully auotmatic segmentation of displayed-math zones from the document image, using only the spatial layout information of math-formulas and equations, so as to help commercial OCR systems which cannot dis...

We define a high-level model to mathematically capture the behavioural interface of abstract Virtual Providers (VP), their refinements and their composition into rich mediator structures. We show for a Virtual Internet Service Provider example how to use such a model for rigorously formulating and proving properties of interest.

Nasal coarticulation has been shown to vary systematically in words depending on the number of phonological neighbors: words with many neighbors are produced with a greater degree of vowel nasality than words with fewer phonological neighbors [9]. This study examines the effect of this systematic low-level variation on lexical perception. The degree of nasality in natural real and nonsense word...

We discuss the discovery of ‘notch-like’ features in the mean pulse profile of the nearby, bright pulsar B0950+08. We compare these low-level features with those previously seen in the pulse profiles of pulsars J0437−4715 and B1929+10. While J0437−4715 is a binary millisecond pulsar and B0950+08 and B1929+10 are isolated, slow pulsars, all three pulsars are nearby and very bright. Furthermore, ...

The human sensory system is capable to rapidly respond to novel input, allowing for quick allocation of attentional resources to the stimulus. In a similar manner, prominent words in speech seem to attract the listeners’ attention and facilitate or alter interpretation. Sentence prominence has been typically studied across languages by examining configurations of acoustic prosodic features duri...

Binary direction relations between points in two-dimensional space are the basis to any qualitative direction calculus. Previous calculi are only on a very low level of granularity. In this paper we propose a generalization of previous approaches which enables qualitative calculi with an arbitrary level of granularity. The resulting calculi are so powerful that they can even emulate a quantitat...
