We present 2D MHD simulations of the radiatively driven outflow from a rotating hot star with a dipole magnetic field aligned with the star’s rotation axis. We focus primarily on a model with moderately rapid rotation (half the critical value), and also a large magnetic confinement parameter, η∗ ≡ B2 ∗R ∗/ṀV∞ = 600. The magnetic field channels and torques the wind outflow into an equatorial, ri...

In this paper we present the development of a magnetic moment reference material for low moment magnetic samples. We first conducted an inter-laboratory comparison to determine the most useful sample dimensions and magnetic properties for common instruments such as vibrating sample magnetometers (VSM), SQUIDs, and alternating gradient field magnetometers. The samples were fabricated and then me...

We have used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to observe the morphologies of ferrite nanoparticles synthesized using a radio frequency plasma torch. These nanoparticles were faceted, having cuboctahedral polygonal growth forms with exclusively the {111} and {100} type faces. A model for the critical nucleus shapes and the growth forms of small cuboctahedral particles is proposed consideri...

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are very important systems with potential use in drug delivery systems, ferrofluids, and effluent treatment. In many situations, such as in biomedical applications, it is necessary to cover inorganic magnetic particles with an organic material, such as polymers. A superparamagnetic nanocomposite Fe3O4/poly(maleic anhydride-co-acrylic acid) P(MAH-co-AA) with a core/...

In this article, a magneto-mechanical model is coupled with an energetic approach of hysteresis. The proposed modification of the parameter related to the coercive field can model the local enlargement of the hysteresis loop under compression. The proposed model is validated by comparison with measurement at different levels of stress.

DOI: 10.1002/adma.201104012 Isolation from external magnetic fields is a fundamental requirement that appears in various scientific experiments today. In particular, for applications where static or slowly varying magnetic fields need to be screened, enclosures made of superconductors or high magnetic permeability metal alloys are typically utilized. These are called “shields” as they isolate t...

We discuss the contribution of the material type in metal wires to the electromagnetic fluctuations in magnetic microtraps close to the surface of an atom chip. We show that significant reduction of the magnetic noise can be achieved by replacing the pure noble metal wires with their dilute alloys. The alloy composition provides an additional degree of freedom which enables a controlled reducti...

Since independence in India there has always been shortage of electricity and at no point of time we have been able to meet the peak demand. The gap between the demand and generation can be bridged/ minimized by either improving the installed capacity or reducing the consumer demand. The gap between availability & demand is of order 6% as on date. If we take into account the issues like environ...

The operation of a wide variety of applications in today’s modern society are heavily dependent on the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials and their interaction with electromagnetic fields. The understanding of these interactions and the associated loss mechanisms is therefore crucial for the improvement and future development of such applications. This thesis is concerned with elect...

Oxygen octahedral rotations are the most common phase transitions in perovskite crystal structures. Here we show that the color symmetry of such pure elastic distortions is isomorphic to magnetic point groups, which allows their probing through distinguishing polar versus magnetic symmetry. We demonstrate this isomorphism using nonlinear optical probing of the octahedral rotational transition i...
